I downloaded this one earlier today after finding it on my RSS reader (I watch everybody!). This looks very cool and I think you did a great job, Martin. In fact I want to make it the featured new model on the next Paper Hollywood update. I actually started work on a card design for Space Station V back in 2006, but my job suddenly turned my life topsy turvy and I never managed time to get back to it. The real trick seems to be in supporting the hub. I see you included a representation of the cable(?) braces which no doubt reinforce the model well. Anyway, I'm glad to see your model and I can't wait to build it. This has to be the first card model version on the web and one of the few models of it ever. There was a LE resin version out some years ago and a small Christmas ornament, but I think that's about it.

The actual filming model itself had nasty structural problems and had to be handled very carefully when they were shooting 2001. I saw a photo of the model taken years later and it was saddening. It had been left out in the weather and much of it had collapsed. I'm pretty sure it's entirely gone by now.

thank you for this lovely model. I am a big 2001 fan and this will go nicely with my UHU2 models

The trick to building this will be letting the glue dry thoroughly before attaching the ring, or supporting "spokes" to the hub. I would go HUB/Spokes (probably one at a time, as far as attaching/then the ring), of course, any combination that gets you to the end is good, but letting each part dry, then assembling in stages will solve any of the issues mentioned and will yield better results. :)

Looks like a great model; I've downloaded it and may just give it a shot. Anybody have any idea what scale it is?

One thing that has struck me about construction is that maybe model rocket tubes could be used for the hub parts. If done right, it might add some rigidity. I'm also wondering about wrapping the "spoke" skins around styrene tubes to add some strength.

My rough judgement from looking at the PDFs would be that this model will come out 7-8 inches diameter. When I build it I'll probably double that size since I've always envisioned a model of it in the 14-18 inch range.

I've studied Space Station V at length and I can safely say scale is a tricky issue with this one. There have been great discrepancies between accounts of it's assumed size in print over the years. These days the consensus seems to put that size at appx. 900 feet in diameter, but I've seen claims that it was supposed to be much larger. To me 900 feet is about right, though.
