2 generations of people who have grown up without knowing "Hi Fidelity" It's sad. I had a headphone tube amp that had only an on/off switch and a volume control. My friends thought I was nuts. :)

and i bet the headphones were suitably matched for an awesome sound  Remember those first portable record players ? Can't remember the Valve set up on those, but with the 6" elliptical speaker they made quite a good sound back in the day. I can still smell the Circuit board heat, the lovely aroma of the wooden cabinet getting seriously hot from the tubes and transformer - that deck never seized up either, that had a TRUSTY motor attached, and some later models still had the same motor design - hell they were robust, and not too bad on keeping the speed constant without any electronics to help. I recall the rubber transmission wheel used to go hard and cause slippage

I had a beautiful 15" Reel to Reel with a couple of Milk crates of professionally recorded tapes. I gave them to my wife's Aunt as the music was from her generation. I may have given away some really hard to obtain music, but she really enjoys t. I went through the machine before I gave it to her and it still sounds great.

Now, you have to build a Valve amp. How about this one?

And this Pre-Amp?

This is what I have (stored, still working, with FM Tuner, all Gold anodized!).

I plan to use it with my Wharfdale Variflex speakers. I was offered a ridiculous price for this system when the economy was good. It is the only amp (LC 290) the H.H. Scott museum (Private) does not have.

I also have a pile of other ones, Harmon Khardon, etc, and a Carver Cube, (Solid State). It has a current source, great for electrostatic speakers. :)

Now this is CLASS ! I would sure like to get up close and personal to the sound created by these beauties.

That website is going to get me in trouble! It is incredible! I know I could never afford these speakers (see attached pics), but if I could, I would love to see the look on my wife;s face, she is an audiophile, and I made a set of tapered 1/4 Wavelength Tubes with an F/s of 29 hz. The tweeter is Piezo-electric so no cross over is needed (as Piezo create their own capacitive feedback, thus acting as a cross over. The speakers are 6.5 feet tall, 14"inches wide and, looking from the side form a right sided triangle with the top 4"inches thick and the base 12"inches deep. The port at the bottom is tuned so the rear wave of the speaker is in phase with the from.

She looked at then *I had worked on this on a saturday after nooonm and she finally came out to the barn and asked what i was do9ng and when she saw them she said "No freakin' way" (she didn't say freakin', there was a "U" in there).

I said, Honey, listen to this, and I put on her favorite Sara Brightman CD. after 5 minutes she said, O.K., but stain them some nice color.

I want these speakers (Below), they are just so audacious!

I just knew you'd enjoy that site. I love the article by the late Marc Bolan :thumb: I too would love to hear those speakers you desire, certainly a conversational piece to have in your living room. Somewhere in this thread you mentioned "sand filled cabinets" - one of my dads first Mono Systems had a huge corner speaker, a 12" full range loudspeaker, she had to be dismantled to be taken away when dad was changing things !, he asked me to take her apart. One day whilst he was at work, i remember having the unit on the path outside and face down {no back panels - the wall corners were the cabinets back} I removed what seemed like a zillion screws, and behind each panel there was highly compressed sand. When all of the sand was removed, you could have made a small sand pit for kids to play in - it was amazing.

I am thinking of doing so but I know the output transformers themselves are worth a lot and people would just take them apart instead of restoring them. I might wait till my son gets older then show him how to repair vacuum tube amps, though it's been so long, except for replacing parts, I'll have to read up on it again. The Scott amps are nice because you can set the Bias right on the amp, after it warms up, which could be 24 hrs!! Aahh, the old days. The HH Scott and Pre-Amp are going together with the Wharfdales for a listening room, Stereo only, and our musical instruments. :)

I don't know if you belong to Papermodelers.com, but I am pretty sure they are in their downloads section. :)
