I was torn between watching the entire macross or the entire yamato series so i flipped a coin and it came up macross, i like it for the jets but i love space battleship yamoto for the capital ships, i was lucky enough to find 3 prints of 3 seperate cruisers from 6" to 12" and i think im gonna make thoes my "very first" 3 builds ever, from smallest to largest.

Uploading it here would be against the wishes of the designer, who has chosen to only make it available for a limited time. You would need to get permission from the designer.

I have a stupid question, and I guess this would apply to any papercraft, free or otherwise. If i have a currently unavailable model and my Brother wants one, would it be wrong for me to print it out, build it, and Give the finished model to my Brother? Im not talking about charging him....but as a gift? even with a Paid for model?

If you have a free, downloadable model in your possession, then you could certainly build it and give it away, or give a copy of the files to your brother or friends. You can even build it and sell the completed model. What you can't do is post the model on the internet without permission from the designer. The key is permission.

In some cases it can be argued that it's a gray area though - if the designer dies, or just moves on to other hobbies and forgets about papercraft, and his/her website disappears because they aren't around to pay the bills and keep it running, posting the models somewhere to keep it available may well be exactly what they would want. In a case like that it hasn't been specifically forbidden, but then you don't specifically have permission either, so here in the forums the rule is you don't do it without permission.

With commercial kits it's a little different. If you buy a printed kit, it's expected that you will make exactly one model from that kit. If you scan it into your computer, print it, and make two models, you have infringed on the copyright by duplicating the model. You bought one, but made two.

If the commercial kit comes in a downloadable, or other electronic form (like CD), unless there is a license agreement with the kit that specifically prohibits it, you can make as many as you want, and do whatever you want with the completed models, including sell them. What you can't do, is give away or sell copies of the original model files, since they are copyrighted material.

Hope that makes it clearer.

Im not talking about selling. I just want to build a model and GIVE it (Free of charge) to my Brother. The reason im asking is this is a model that is not available anymore, but I paid money for it. it was an electronic download.

I think what he means is giving the model to his brother after he has built it.

I think there is no problem, it is similar to giving away a DVD. After you have purchased it, you can do with it as you please, as long as you don't make copies and then sell the original or sell the copies. You can even sell it for more than what you got it for.

PS : once again, just my thoughts

If you go back and re-read my post you'll find that I answered your question quite clearly. I simply attempted to be thorough.

Fourth paragraph...

Geez!
