This is a WIP model of the Hiigaran battleship from Homeworld 2. I have had a few issues with building this model, mostly with the various pieces of the ship fitting together.

It looks like yours is going together better than mine did. I have a slight warp and twist in the bow area. I also only built one of the gun turrets, too tiny and complex for my fat fingers. Still an impressive model when finished, though. I'm looking forward to seeing yours when its done.

Well whatever problems you had, you seem to have overcome, that is one badass looking ship!

Warping certainly has been a bit of an issue with the pieces not fitting together right. I think I can straighten most of it out as long as I can bend it enough and apply some super glue in the right places.

Warping and large empty volumes of space was a problem on a few of the homeworld ships that I tried a few years ago. Perhaps I'll try again soon I really loved the ship designs. Again fantastic work!

I would make box pieces to fit inside, it does wonders for models like this.

That's funny all the things I tried (braces, laminating, chip) and a box never once crossed my mind. I'm thinking my build stack just got very heavy with HW ships.

Thanks for that tip Zathos; I've avoided building models like these because of the hassle of warping issues. Making shaped formers to fit inside these models is a real hassle that your box idea totally avoids. Funny, we're always told to "think outside the box"; It seems that sometimes the box is the answer ;-)

How did I miss this until now? lol

Love Homeworld more than anything else in sci-fi, well next to Star Wars of course.

You've done great so far. I actually haven't gotten around to trying the battleship yet so I'm enjoying your progress.

I agree. Most of those models were ripped from the game and pumped right through Pepakura and such. Luckily the models were never that complex, so the results were usually half decent.

Before you fold up the model, use the fold lines to make your box. Remember that it really only has to touch a couple of surfaces to be effective. Just use the inside dimensions, the models give you the box ( a loose word, as the may end up rather odd looking) by the fold lines. Connecting two rectangles with a cross brace so that it forms an I Beam on the inside, is one example. Since it is inside, you don't have to be too accurate, and a small can of "Great Stuff", a really Great to have around. Just a tiny bit of that stuff goes a long way, (and I mean tiny, like peanut sized, as until you get used to the way it expands, you could create problems, but it sticks really well). I use boxes on models I design, like the picture below. Which turned into the second picture. I made those a long time ago when my son we very young, he still plays with it. That was back in 2006.
