Model Of The Month: 1/4 Scale Mercury Capsule: Done 1/1 Scale

Hey Paul

Things are looking great. i found a job...been too busy to build and post.

Did you make these shingles? It looks like the dimples are some sort of flat shiny black plastic. Whats the scoop?

Congrats on the job I know how hard it is to be employed these days. The shingles are made out of poster board and black chrome paper.Five layers in each shingle.I'm going to leave off the ones around the hatch area for under shingle details.I redid the red in a brown red and working on a stand. This picture is I think the heat shield unflown. And part of the stand I want to make for mine. Also got some tissue paper in beige for parachute bags.mercury_capsule_5_of_5.jpg

Boy...those shingles really bring that thing to life. Scott said he'd send me some, I haven't seen them yet, i'm really getting the itch to put them on.

What are you using for the rivits?

1/4 inch paper punched poster board.Hey I was looking around Zealot And found Surf Dudes detail set for a couch and interior .It scales up great for this one.I,m working on the couch today will put up pictures later.

WHOOOAAAA......Where did you find this? This is exactly what I've been trying to build from scratch, mine looks almost identical, but not quite. I also have Surfduke's sigma 7 model and have tried to scale it up but couldn't figure out how to assemble it. You say this is already scaled up and print ready? I put mine aside, not liking the way it was turning out. Where is this found?

Inquiry...why did you use poster board for the shingles? Is card stock too thin for structual integrity?

No you have to scale it up from1:24 look for mercury capsule sigma 7 on here.Surfduke made a interior for the free Sigma 7 they had here a while back. There is some modifcation I did to it.I used poster board on the shingles because its thicker so less layers.

AH, now I see. I did ramp up the scale of this couch once already. Thanks for the build pics, now it makes sense. When I did it I went to 600%, how much did you jack it up? Have you tried the control arms yet? If you do, post some build pics, I know it's a pain posting photos here, some times I will get the upload error five or six time before I can get a picture posted.

This is why I have been doing most of my work progress on Paper modelers, I can post five at a time and put up fifteen or twenty pics on one post. I put up alot more of the building process there

Anytime I can help you I,m in. Detailing this build is no easy task the lack of info is amazing.I researched the Gemini and Apollo for my next 1/4 scale projects and there is volumes of information.Mercury information is very limited.Probly because of the cold war and the space race.I don't know how I,m going to do the arms yet.I,m trying to get the David Weeks blue prints.I order the blue prints and when I checked out theres nothing telling you when and how to pay them. And no phone number just an email. As far as with sizing the couch with my printer I would have to go 825% so I went 800% and redraw it to fit.I tryed 600 too small 800 still to small and the next was 1200% way to big.

Wow! Very nice work on the couch there!

And by the way, it's Surfduke, not dude. His real name is Carl Hewlett and he has made a couple of brilliantly detailed models.
