The PDO's unfold is a little unnecessarily difficult in some regions, but I look forward to making it.
There's a guy on deviantart that make an extremely low-poly version of the SR2 that I'm seeing if he will give up the model for papercraft purposes, in case someone wants to make a tiny one for some tabletop rpg purposes.
Oh, and I made a REALLY simple version which I'll post pics of soon.

Also, melvin008, I've also got a collection of ships models from ME2, if you want to take a look at them or would be willing to help me with an unfold, just let me know, I'd greatly appreciate it.

After looking at the complexity of the parts of the sr-2, I'm warming up with the original Mass Effect Normandy model first. It's a really good looking model and fairly easy to assemble. I would be happy to post pics if somebody to tell me how to.

When you are posting to a thread use the "Post Reply" button that appears just under the bottom left of the last post. You can't attach pictures if you use the "Quick Reply" form that appears at the bottom of each page.

When composing your reply scroll down a bit below the area where you enter your message. You will find a small section titled "Attach Files" with a big button labelled "Manage Attachments". Just click that button and a window will pop up that allows you to browse for files to attach. Select the file and then click the Upload button.

Easy as pie. See pic attached LOL

She's a beauty

Definitely looking good. I've never played the game - it's only on xbox and I have a ps3, but the ship is just a real eye-catcher. I think it's one of the nicest designs ever for a space ship.

Seeing it again makes me want to build one of my own, and get back to that SR2.

Keep up the good work Bob.

Thanks, Steve. You did a great job creating the model. I took the day off today to ski with the family. I'm just about done with second lower hull wing.

Any chance someone could shoot me a PDF of that ship? I'd love to build it, but WinRAR keeps trying to tell me that there's something wrong with the file.

Info needed

Well,

Seeing this thread come back to life, and seeing my model of the SR1 being built again has got me interested in tackling the SR2. The unfold melvin did seems to be a straight unfold of the original model, which contains some part intersections that will seriously affect the buildability of the model.

While I can make no promises as to timelines, my work and work schedule has been permitting me a lot more time to work on developments lately and I've recently finished the development I was working on and am ready to tackle a new one, so I've decided this will be it.

The 3D model is very well done and well detailed. The hull is layered in several places and I've decided to build this into the kit, making it a more advanced model than the SR1. I've started cleanup work on the mesh and it's my intention to release parts as I go so that I can get feedback, correct problems, and so that people can build along with me. My plan is to start with the hull, then move on to the "wings" and engines. The other details will be thrown in whenever.

So, first off, I have some questions since I've never played the game. Referring to the pictures below, the first is just a nice teaser for you all. The second pic is a detail of the forward section of one of the "engines". It appears that it is designed to bend at this point. Is that the case? If so I will design the model so that this point is movable.

The third picture shows a large door on the underside of the ship. How does this door operate. Does it fold down like a ramp, disappear up into the ship like a garage door, or what? Also, what does it look like inside?

Any reference pics you can supply would be welcomed. I could specifically use rear-view shots of the ship with the engines on. Right now the engine outlet area is just black. I would like to adjust textures so it looks like the engines are active.

I'm pretty excited about getting at this project, so let's party folks.

Steve

Steve-
First of all, I should fininsh your SR-1 tomorrow. I'm a firefighter and I don't like bringing the big parts to work to assemble and risk damage so I plug away at it on my days off when my kids are at school. It is a really nice build and the parts are sturdy and easy to understand. I also like the scale. I used a fair amount of cardboard to keep the hull and wings straight and water based paint is filling in all the cut lines nicely. The only thing I had difficulties with was where to place the wing mounts for the engines, but there was plenty of images on Google.
Secondly, I am pumped that you want to take on the SR-2. I admit....I need instructions and would rather not need a computer to use the pik viewer to help me assemble it. It looks to be incredibly detailed.
Third, if you have a PS3, play ME2. The first game is slighlty better but the second is still amazing. I've played through it 3 times and each experience has been different.
Fourth, the SR-2 was not meant to land like the SR-1 (too big) so in the game I never saw the wing tips pitch forward. As far as the docking hatch, believe it just lowers. You get a quick view at :44

I'm looking forward to building the SR-2

Cool

I toyed around with a display stand for the SR-1.

I like it. Can't wait to see it holding the finished model. Interesting that Melvin hasn't chimed in. I wonder if he's still around.

I'm plugging away at the mesh cleanup of the SR-2. With the ship scaled to be about 18" in total length the main body comes in around 16". The individual layers on the hull are only about two sheets of card stock thick (assuming something like 110lb cardstock). Edge coloring will be a must.

From the video you posted it looks like it just opens down flat so that's what I'll aim for. I'll figure out a way to make it open and close so that it stays closed instead of falling open. Hopefully.

Hey look, I'm the 999,999th visitor! The same thing happened to me yesterday! What a coincidence. Come to think of it it was on this site too. Hey! Wait a minute....... sign1

Looks great!

She looks great Bob. I'm making excellent progress cleaning up the mesh on the SR2 and planning how to put it all together with the detail I want. I'm even thinking ahead and allowing for the possibility of a simple version and an advanced version with layering etc. It's going to be awesome.

Thanks for the great pics,

Steve

SJSquirrel, I'm glad to see you taking a shot at the SR2 model. I built your first one and it was excellent. F131's rendition looks great.

I think the front engine tips do move to steer the ship with mass effect fields. The rear engine bits move as well. Below is a screen I hope helps.

I'm really looking forward to this one. I may attempt to build it to scale with your SR1 model...though it is supposed to be close to twice the size in the game...

Speaking of the game, both ME1 and 2 are available on the PC (as long as you have a video card from the last couple of years) and are well worth playing.

Good luck.
