This is my new idea for the scenic section of my layout... The old idea was just too convoluted and used way to many grades... helix's... too early for me. Keep in mind the terminal is now constructed...

Anyways, lets play color by numbers:

green = passenger terminal tracks
yellow = freight terminal/yard tracks
light blue = engine facility tracks
dark blue = turnaround/branch line into mountains
white = valley branch line
red = main line

the inspiration for this section of the layout comes from:
http://www.trains.com/mrr/default.aspx?c=tp&id=93&size=&scale=20&type=&keywords=white+river

in fact where the loop is located in that layout... I kinda plan to almost 100% rip off the scenic area there...

I'm working on another revision... very scenic, less industry... don't know what I think about it yet.

Looks like a great plan!
I was wondering how the table works?
I am thinking of putting one in to replace my CMR turntable.
Are you happy with the Walthers function?
Thanks , Mike

Thanks Mike!

while I don't have everything wired up yet, I have been playing around with the table. It works pretty good. I haven't programed it yet, but so far it seems to function pretty decently.

I'm using code 80 track (only code 55 dealer is 45 minutes across the city) so theres a bit of a jump between the bridge tracks and the lead tracks... but my locos seem to handle it okay.

Thanks , I may start to tear out my old table today.
Keep the updates coming on your layout , it really looks good. Shoot some pics to the shop and I'll put them in the customer gallery.
Thanks , Mike

Wiredup,

The plan is super, you should have a lot of operating possibilities and good areas for industries to service.

Thanks all for the positive comments on the plan. maybe it's not as bad as I thought it was.

Anyways, I stayed up till 3:00am last night working on revisions... I just finished revision 9 this morning (the plan posted last night is revision 2 by the way)

I think I really got something special here!

no color's to help with this plan.... I'm feelin kinda lazy after all that planning, minds gonna explode.

anyways, here's my latest revision!

This is the new bottom section... gonna do a double decker! :mrgreen:

So... instead of making the mainline a continuous loop I've decided to make it a point to point layout... with one heck of a main line run!

So the terminal stays as is. When a train leaves Eastbound it reaches a return loop with industry located within. I think I'll scenic this area before it gets tracked. That way I can play structures and do the siding around it.

After the train loops it head back to the station... not very realistic, but whatever... then it heads Westbound towards the helix found in the bottom center. The helix will bring the layout up 16 inches to:

which will have scenery a lot like:
http://www.trains.com/mrr/default.aspx?c=a&id=1438

The idea here is that the top section will be 90% scenic that way I won't have to really worry about switching and what not. Because of the huge mainline run I've also decided to double track it at this time of the planning stages.

What I think I'll do is I'll snake the train through the area so that I can recreate this scene in n scale:

well thats my plan anyways.

The branch line still exists. it's just raised a bit now... and will get some small modifications as time passes.

No trains swerving over each other though. wall1

You've hit on my preferred configuration for medium to large layouts.

eeek, I haven't done a lot of updates here in a while...

anyways, the layout has gotten pretty far. in fact the main line was all laid out and the terminal completed... it was on it's maiden voyage that we learned the issues with this layout...

I shoulda listened to everyone and stayed far away from 11" radius curves.

So the whole layout was turned down (including the terminal, as it's too large to accommodate 13" radius curves) and now I've got a new plan where the lowest radius is 13"

Here it is!

With this plan I have finally reached my goals....
- run 2 trains at once with minimal attention needed
- grades @ 2% with opportunities for trains to cross over each other.
- lots of room for industry
- not going to require a lot of frustration with strange grades/helicies
- lots of room for scenery like water/forest
- a junction on the main line
- double tracked passenger terminal
- freight yard
- engine terminal w/roundhouse

I just need a good resource for laying track. I have a huge issue with laying reliable track...

I'm currently using code 80 atlas flex and peco code 80 turnouts.

Could we get an aerial photo of an up & running layout?

unfortunatey not at this time, as I have just torn down a large portion of the current layout so I can start converting it over to the new plan.

but I do a video on youtube of it. search for used "wired335" and theres a vid of my daylight special doing the whole loop of the layout before I tore it down.

I'll check it out. Is it OK to put a link in our VIDEO VAULT forum. I'm trying to build it up.
