Death Star Diorama - FINAL PHOTOSET

Hello!

I am new to this site and this is my first post.

I've been working on a Death Star Diorama and I thought I'd publish images here.

The images feature the latest Hasbro Legacy Millennium Falcon that I have custom painted and a load of my kids' Star Wars figures.

I've added laser effects using Photoshop.

My first images are show only half the Diorama. More images will follow.

Grrrrreat modeling and photography! I just love to see creative uses of models and excellent photography. It reminds me of a story board done in CG. Just a beauty of an effort.

Almost forgot to ask; what camera/lens combination did you use to get such excellent depth of field. I'll also comment that the lighting is exceedingly well done. Perhaps a few words of detail aimed at someone like yours truly who can use the information for his own models.

Are you a professional photographer?

i swear i thought that first picture was a seen from the movie being used as a reference for the rest. crap man that is some damn nice work. sorry stronger words are not forum friendly.

First off thanks for your positive remarks.

I use a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX07, it has a slightly wider angled lense than most small digital cameras and pictures come out pretty clear.

Depth of Field is achieved by getting the shot as low as possible across the Diorama. What also helps is the size and scale of the Diorama, this one was around 4.5 sqft, so it isn't too hard to achieve a good depth of field.

Here are a couple of images of a much smaller diorama of the same subject, much harder to create any realism.

First off - Nope I'm not a professional photographer, but thanks for the ego boost!

I use a Panasonic Lumix Model DMC-FX07 - it was a wider angled lense than most Digital cameras.

My secret is that I don't use a flash. As long as you have enough light, and you don't need that much, pictures come out far more colourful and realisitc.

Also the camera engles are important as they give a sense of scale, but working with such a large diorama does make it a bit easier.

Waaaay cool! Now be honest, did you build it for the lad, or for yourself:)?
I got about 50% of the way through a complete cutaway Tantive IV (8' long in all) "dollhouse" doirama playset for my guys, in the same scale...to fit those action figures. I got bogged down with all the engines, and details though. By the time I finish it, I'll have to give it to their kids.

Really nice work, and excellent photos to boot.

I had to Photoshop some of the decals to suit my own diorama.

I am planning to produce a tutorial on how to make this diorama, but it will have to wait until I've finished making my latest project -

Oh yeah, I thought I recognized that! The old Mini-Rig! A.k.a., flying scout walker. Back from the days when Hasbro wasn't afraid of coming up with new ideas. Those old toys really fueled my imagination for new Star Wars "episodes" in my back-yard sandbox. :mrgreen:

That Endor landing platform is going to be sweet, btw! :thumb:
