Hey Guys! Jan's 1:430 Aliens dropship gave me an idea, since I had a lot of fun building it. Now I am planning on making a small dropship series!
Starting with my pelican. They will all be in 1:430 scale to fit the Cheyenne dropship. I already have the 3D model done and textured, today I will be unfolding and possibly test building (the latter only if no urgent beer drinking comes up). With a proposed length of 30.5m, the model will be 7.1cm or 2.8 inches long.
Any ideas on other dropships to build? So far I have taken into consideration:
Halo Pelican
Halo Spirit (Covenant dropship)
ISSCV (from Space: Above and beyond)
HL2 Combine dropship/gunship
Starship Troopers Dropship
one of the many Carryall versions from Dune
C&C Tiberian Sun Carryall

maybe a Space Shuttle or an Osprey for comparison ;)

That is a very cool idea!:thumb: I wish I had thought of it, but then again my design skills are not quite that far advanced. :eek:ops: The HALO ships would be very cool, maybe a Warthog to hang under the dropship? The Dune ones would be cool too!

oh man if there are any dune ships out there i want to build them i spent what must have been 6 months trying to design a highliner and ended up with a tube with holes in it.... i was so ashamed of myself. i can't even design a brick.

I like the idea of the large and small dropships from the movie starship troopers, but even better designs were the dropships from the CG kiddies series version of Starship troopers. imo those ones looked way better, even though the series was .... not way better.

There are other paper models around that you might want to consider adding to the mini collection your doing: Are you familiar with TOPO solitario's chickenhawk? Or Mel Ebbles' UD-41 dropship? He even has a new Percheron dropship in the works that looks a whole lot like the BSG Raptor, which is a really really good thing imo.

So far I'm not really well informed about Starship Troopers dropship, I just remembered that they had some :) And that they would probably rather easy to build due to their simple shape.
Anyway, here's the first in the series: the MKI Mini Pelican! There are two versions, one with landing gear down like this one (the prototype) and one with gear up.
Unfortunately I had to use my own printer since the university was already closed... so I am not too happy about the colours. But next week I can print it there :)
Note my tweezers and cutting knife for size comparison... btw. at that scale the Pillar of Autumn would have to be 2.8m long ;)

Would the Imperial Lambda-class Shuttle count?

If not that, then the Imperial Sentinel-class Landing Craft sure does. There's a nice one on the net somewhere, if only I could remember where.

Thank you, those would make a great addition :D Plus, I already have 3-view templates for both. But I think the LAAT or ISSCV will be next in line :)

Thought about that, too... I think I do have some templates from Mech Commander lying around, which would only need to be rescaled, but maybe I'll write an article on where to find more dropships that already exist and how to scale them. Btw. the Imperial shuttles are a great idea :)

can you believe they want $19.95 for a very small replication of this? would be great to see tiny on paper. now the overloard would be too huge. basically an egg on stilts( or toothpicks?)

I couldn't find a lot of information about the size of neither the common spherical dropship nor the leopard... but I'm estimating they're both a bit too large for what I was planning, they simply wouldn't match the other dropships. Maybe I'll make them a special feature one day :)
Nevertheless, there are still those 2 or 4-rotored helicopters used to airlift 'mechs into the field... :)

There is a Leopard Class card model kicking around here somewhere.

The Overlord and Union would not be difficult to make although the models would be rather large if made to scale with table top mecha.

The Leopard is the smallest of the common dropships for Battletech at 66m x 52m x 22m (L x W x H). Union 82m x 82m x 78m. Overlord 99m x 99m x 132m.

Found a few images of the SST dropships here and there, just to add to the flow of ideas...
