Hi there Shipmates. I know this is a far cry from my Titanic builds, but i must say that ever since i started making the Titanic {on my other thread} you guys here have weened me away from my SPACE projects. I never knew how exciting this ship modelling could be, and the amount of work i've seen on here is amaizing - Hats off to you guys. Well here's the start of the WIP for the TIRPITZ. I hope you enjoy seeing the build. Regards. Pete

You're off to a very good start Peter. Looks like you're doing a waterline version. That will be fun. Are you planning on putting it atop a water base or doing a diorama???

I've had thoughts of doing large scale card warships in water bases or dioramas. Some full hull models are easy to convert to waterline and some are not.

I'll closely follow your progress.

Thanks for that friend. Yes i am going to make a diorama for her - something along the lines of a Fjord in the background and a misty effect on the final shoot of her {probably dry ice to make the mist} it would be easy to do this on computer, but i'm into videography, and prefer to make effects manually. I think she would look very menacing looming through mist.. What do you think? Regards Pete.

Hi there my old mate. If we can find the elusive X Craft in the right scale i will include that in the diorama just for you. You find {or anyone to make my mate Phil happy} and i will make. Regards. Your friend Pete.

I agree. After seeing the 1:200 USS Leutze on water using acrylic and silicone, I'm really interested in doing the same. I bought the JSC Invincible and Derfflinger to try it out....

Hi Phil. I found a site for a model of the X Craft you mentioned the link is below. Now my friend, the Tirpitz i am building is a JSC 1/400 scale and when i make the dioroma there would only need to be the top part of the x-craft just above the waves... I've looked at the X-Craft and i could have a go at modelling it from scratch {just the top part required} all i need is a model length to work with ! can you work out how long it would have to be in that scale please? I know it wont be that big but worth having a go to make you a happy bunny . Regards. Your friend Pete

Howdy Pete, I don't think it would really be worth it at that scale on the waterline you are looking at about an inch long and a fraction high also I can't remember if they were brought to the surface and captured or if they abandoned the sub and swam up to be captured either way they were on board the Tirpitz when the charges went off. You would be better off making a larger separate model of an X Craft to display with it, maybe a large full hull given to friends that might want one model:twisted: The Lancaster was about 18 feet longer than the midget subs so I suppose you could always have a 617 lanc drop a Tallboy on her:thumb: OR of course you could just tell me to stop messing you about and finish your wonderful model!sign1
All the best Old Mate Phil

Hi Phil my old mate. Yes that does sound a wee bit small {but who knows- it might still appear in the diorama ! } is there a paper model of a Lancaster out there in that scale ? now that would look BRILLIANT wouldn't it :thumb:? I'm making the CONNING TOWER at the moment, and will post it when finished, there's quite a few parts to it, and i'm really enjoying myself  i just wish i had more time to do more work to her... but hey there's no rush. Take care my friend. Regards. Your old mate Pete.

OK Pete you really shouldn't listen to me and just build your model. I don't know of any paper Lancs that scale although the Corgi showroom one is probably close HOWEVER ! my friend as you insist on listening to my mad ramblings heres another. 617 bombed her in 44 and the JSC scheme was worn in Norway in June- July 42 SSSoooo if you want to attack her she was had at in July by Barracudas and Firefly's which do exist in 1/400 although I don't know if you can get them separately i've only seen them with carriers. Heres a link to a diorama showing her in the scheme, WARNING if you are squeamish take care the model is made from Plas...well you know

Sweet superstructure! Nice and clean!

Cheers Ski... I'm putting all the parts onto this one area before i move on, the guns are so tiny to make i thought i'd better do them in the areas i'm working on, otherwise i think i'd go crazy making them all in one go - too much eye strain . This is a really nice model to make and looking forward to rigging her up. Regards. Pete

For me BB's rank the highest on the food chain and that especially goes for the Bismark Class. Tirpitz sported B and X turrets in pale grey to stand out, making her to appear to only have two turrets, the deck was camo as your's is. The Battleship fired her main battery on only one occasion against an enemy target, and this was during a bombardment of Spitzbergen in September 1943. The British penetrated her Altenfjord anchorage w/midget subs in the same month. Heavily damaged, she was patched up. She was then attacked by British carrier aircraft. Bombs too small to inflict vital damage, surrounded by nets, Tripitz could not be torpedoed. British Bomber Command took over the attack and flying from North Russia, Lancasters was able to finish her w/the heaviest bombs in their inventory. She was hit five times with 5.45 ton bombs. That makes her one tough nut to crack. Speaks highly of the workmanship that went into the planning and building of this Battleship. She went down with 1200 men on board, though I do not know how many perished. Keep posting those build photo's.
