Fluesheet's Builders Photos

I may make this a running thread as my railroad continues to add rolling stock. The idea struck with a Christmas gift from my father to my wife and kids of an Accurail 3 pack of "Big Four" hoppers with instructions that this be a family project. My wife just finished hers (first railroad car ever) this past week and I just had to take a "builder's photo" of it. She rolled her eyes...

Without further ado, the gift (clever idea for you grandfathers out there), and the car itself:

My wife, upon seeing her work here in public, was appreciative of the comments, but then commented that she's glad the details don't show up in the photo.

(Which tells me that she is detail oriented enough that I need her to do some more cars...)

Looks good! You should have used some white chalk or water color or something to simulate the "white walls" on the edge of the wheels that the railroads seemed to like to paint on the wheels for all of their builders photos.

Very nice hopper....It's great your wife has an interest in your "toy" trains..!!
I've seen a lot of "obscure" road names, but the one on this hopper I'd never come across...What is it..?

The Big Four became part of the NYC family..in the 1920s or so...Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and St. Louis were the four cities. It was (and is) a mainline railroad. The mainline has a nice, massive concrete Viaduct in Sidney, OH...which was part of a major relocation in the 1920s of the mainline which turned it into a grade separated, double track, high speed mainline at that town. My grandparents are buried within a stone's throw of the line. It is the fastest mainline I've seen south of the Water level route.

kmorris, steamhead, thanks for the comments. I can't take credit for the family project idea - that was my dad's - but I agree it was a good one! My son has sent built his as well.

nkp, good information. I'm a big massive viaduct fan. I'll have to check that out.

This all looks pretty neat. Hey nkp174, when I started reading your post I thought for a moment you were referring to a different Big Four (go ahead, ask me which Big Four).

Let me guess...
LNER, LMS, GWR, and SR. A fine big four indeed...although...
LB&SC, SE&CR, and L&SWR were all >> than the SR

Their LS&MS restoration looks interesting. Usually the underframe hardware is what is missing...so it is sort of the opposite of the normal wooden car restoration.

I'm surprised that cardstock would be used for a kit that costs so much. Is there any instructions for making it moisture proof? Regardless, it is a fine looking kit.
