joefryfry's layout - The Waynesburg Southern

This will be my running thread for my layout. My layout will be loosely, maybe very loosely, based on the Waynesburg Southern, a piece of the MGA mine district that runs from Waynesburg, PA down into West Virginia and serves Federal #2, and Blacksville #1 and 2 mines. A link to the history of the rails can be found here: http://www.wvrail.railfan.net/mga_past.html
A little about me: I am 36, married this past April and expecting my first child next May. I work for an aerial mapping firm drawing maps for civil engineers. You wouldn't be suprised how much this helps in making realistic layouts. Our biggest clients are the coal companies, and I get stuck waiting for the coal train to pass about twice a week, so naturally, I'm interested in coal railroading.

Here's a sketch of what I've come up with so far. I still have plenty of thinking and planning to do, so this is preliminary. I'm not into operations, but plan to learn more about it. Any good web pages with info on operation? I know nothing about it. Thanks.

Looks like a pretty cool plan Joe. Should be fun to operate, and fun to build, mountains are always really fun to build, and you have 2 of them on your plan from what you have drawn up

Keep in mind that the reach into that back corner is going to be somewhere in the vicinity of 3'. Also remember that your longest train should not be longer than your shortest reverse loop and reverse loops have to be isolated and wired differently with DC or DCC.

That back left corner is going to be a helix. I am going to test build one and run a train first before I ever make a final plan. If it don't work, no helix then. It will also be under a mountain, so will the other corner. The wall they will be against isn't a load bearing wall and on the other side is my work area that will be future expansion. So I will be making some access doors to get under the mountains (don't tell the wife). I am tall with big ape arms, and I measured that I can reach 30" comfortably. I've done a couple layouts and had to start over a couple times and have learned that proper planning pays off big time later, even though some plans do need adjustment. I had two reverse loops on my last HO layout and they worked fine with DCC. I did buy an DC engine that will need to be converted, but that's another story. I'm going to try to get a link to a video of my HO layout that I had to tear down before we moved. It's nothing special. Thanks.

Video seems to not work, says its unavailable lol

Anyways, good to see you got the benchwork up and the pink foam base down :thumb:

I don't know how long it takes You Tube to approve a video. Can I upload them here? Not sure. For the video, you may have your whole seat to sit in, but you'll only need the edge, it's awesome.

The link to the you tube video is up now. It was so worth the wait, what a video! Make sure you have da sound on. I'll be putting up videos of my new N-gauge layout after there is some substance to it, in about 10 years. I thank you in advance for your patience.

I have all my HO stuff still. Debating whether or not sell it all and commit to N gauge forever. All three of those engines are Atlas Master Gold (DCC with sound). Not sure if I should go to the HO forum and offer it there first or go to Ebay.
