hey guys, anyone know where i can get pallets of bricks or concrete blocks for loads on trailers and around construction sites? Saw this pic: http://www.lancemindheim.com/team_track.htm and now i really want to model a scene like this with pallets of blocks but cant find anything like it

also, anyone know who makes the forklift in that pic?

Thanks for the link, i had forgot about modelrailstuff. this may sound picky, but im not a fan of there pallets of bricks, blocks..... the black bands that are painted on just look junky to me and i dont think ive ever seen a pallet of bricks or blocks banded with metal strapping like that. When i worked at Lowes, they came off the Quickcrete Truck in shrinkwrapped pallets of 120 for 6x8x16 and 90 for 8x8x16 blocks.

The only pallets of "blocks" ive ever seen banded like the modelrailstuff pallets of blocks were pallets of deck pier support/starter blocks, and those came with 4 bands....

I agree - the detailing is a little weak - the 'bands' are overly thick, and run in the wrong direction - prototype palletized CMUs are either shrink wrapped like you've noticed, or a few rows are strapped horizontally; ModelRailStuff's banding leaves a lot of units loose (if they weren't a single piece :thumb: ).

Can you sand off the bands and then touch up the bricks if the base material is not the correct color?

I was going to buy one and try that, trust me i thought about it, however i want TONS of these things lol and thats going to be ALOT of work

I talked to one of my buddy's, the guy who makes the HO Scale Loads for hoppers.... and he said he could maybe make a casting for the stakes of blocks and bricks.... so we will see if he can do it

Art supply stores sell casting kits. Get a "pellet", remove the bands, and use it to make your mold. Then cast away until you have a room full! :thumb:

Those card models look great way to fill a lot of space quickly and cheaply, then add a few more detailed pallets nearer the foreground. You could have the look of a very busy operation in no time.

If you are taking apart your layout you should have plenty of foamboard. Why not give an atempt at carving some? If you can get one to work out good, you could use that to make a mold for more.

That would be a cool idea if i wanted to have a brick/block manufacturing yard

another great idea  I do have a lot of extra foam, but i am re-using alot of it on the modules too. Ill have some extra small pieces that would be perfect for making some molds from to cast my own

Josh,Indeed brick and concrete blocks can be banned with metal strapping.

Also strapping comes in several sizes from light to heavy duty..

As far as shrinkwrapped pallets they are not as stable as metal strapping but, seems to be all the rage these days like cardboard skids..

In today's shipping market, the straps are heavy duty fiber-reinforced plastic, like giant packaging tape. It's a lot cheaper than metal strapping.

Just a random thought. I usually try to avoid them, but they ocassionally slip through.

LOL i know what you mean about the cardboard skids, we used to get some heavy things on them off the stocking trucks and they would always seem to crumble. Just another example of the company taking the "cheap" way out lol

Also, when i worked at Lowes, we had a banding machine that was portable, it wasnt really a machine, it was fully manual lol. But anyways, you un-coiled the metal strapping from the spool and wrapped it around the lumber or whatever you were banding, cranked it down with a manual crank, then crimped a metal clip over the banding. It was pretty easy and efficient.... But i heard when i left Lowes, that the metal bands were being terminated, at least for all Lowes. To many people kept sliceing there fingers open on the sharp edges. But until they go through the 15 or so coils of steel ones that are already on hand stored in the racking, they wont be using the high strength plastic bands. lol Most of the lumber and other products like the decking and plywood and such already came with with the plastic bands and have been for some time.....
