Well, this isn't a switcher, but I couldn't visit Steam Town without getting a shot of Big Boy for my good friend Deano:

The loco looked a little rough, but I was assured that new paint would be applied soon.

Wow! You're not kidding!!:eek::-D

Wayne

Yeah, if you ever got to meet John, you'd be surprised as he is a very young guy, but man does he know his tea-kettles! This guy in my (and many others) opinions ranks up there with Doyle McCormick, Steve Lee and Ross Rowland.

ON MY SIDE OF THE TRACKS...
..BOY am i late on this one, should have put this up Saturday:eek:ops: ...

Went to dads Saturday, we ended up running some trains:thumb: . even though i have 14 engines there, i have just really been running one of my CNW engines lately, and Dad has been running one of his Milwaukee Road engines, between the two of us we have plenty of roads to choose from, yet usually we run the old "home roads", i guess it goes back to "roots":winki: .

At one time Beloit was a BIG RR town, its not only the HOME of Fairbanks-Morse:thumb: , but TWO Class 1 roads Main lines ran right through the city. the Milwaukee Road "ruled" the east side of town, while the CNW "ruled" the west side of town, and both came very close together in South Beloit.

In my mind i can still very clearly see the wig wags at each intersection, a silver pole with a big bright red light in the center of a circle of plate steel with a black cross painted on it, swinging in between diamonds, with a bell at the top of the pole that made a very distinct sound. if you were lucky enough to be by the the wig wags as they come to life, it was a fantastic show in its self, yet it was just a preview of the SPECTACULAR sight that would be bestowed upon you free of charge, as an FM, Geep, F unit or MP15's rolled by with a freight that was full of cars that at the time seemed like they came from foreign lands to me...ahh...memories:smilie: .

its funny how even though i am a HUGE UP fanattic, on Saturdays my mind goes back to the old "home roads":winki: .

Anyways, as we were running trains i remembered seeing an article in Model RRer about the Milwaukee Roads ribside boxcars, it said something to the effect that the PROTOTYPE ones that had "Route of the Electrified Olympian" on it were very rare, now i thought dad had a model of that car, so we searched through his cars for it, but it seems he didn't have it. i have some Milwaukee road cars, but i didn't think i had it:confused: , ended up I DID:119: , as i looked at the bottom of it i see i bought it for $8.00 used, then i remembered i picked it up at the Lena show last year, i think its a Roundhouse car, but i am not sure:eek:ops: .

DSC02289.JPG

After looking for that Milwaukee Road car at dads i asked if he built the three Milwaukee Road ribside cars he bought from the Milwaukee Road Historical society at the Lena show, sadly its real hard for dad to model these days and he said he started one but was unable to finish it, i offered to build the kits, and ended up completing two of them, i will do the last one of the three he has this Saturday:thumb: . i too bought one of those cars, but never started it, i just have to many projects to have started it:eek:ops: . those cars are real nice, i would put them in the same class as a Branchline Model, only a bit better then the Brachlines. Here are some pics of MY unbuilt Milwaukee Road ribside car.

**For those of you out there that are modeling the Transition era, i think there are three cars that you ABSOLUTELY MUST HAVE,

A Ribside box, any brand will do, this one is an Athearn

A Wagontop box, this one is made by Bowser

A Roundtop box, this is made by Bowser

ALL THREE of those boxcar types were a very unique part of our RR history, nice pieces to have if your modeling that time period:thumb: .

Well, i have rambled enough:eek:ops: .

Till next time...Stay on track:winki: .

Hey Deano, you have any pics of that TTBX (UP) autorack bro?

I LOVE open Auto racks. One of these days, I'm going to have to get on the stick and start building a bunch for my WP trains (Open cars). Any suggestions as to best ones to purchase?

Tom, that Autorack is an RTR Accurail:thumb: , kinda pricey, but real good detail, and its well built, solid as a rock:winki: . i keep meaning to fill it with good quality brand Fords, like Mini Metals, but i haven't found a good deal on them yet, perhaps at one of the upcoming shows this year:smilie: .

Yeah, I hear ya there, hindsight being 20/20, I should have bought as many Pinto's and Bobcats from Fresh Cherries when they were on clearance for $.47 a piece at Wally World. Those and the cheap plastic Life-Like Ford pickups would be perfect to fill racks like that on the WP out of the Ford Plant in Milpitas.

I think Greg Elems on this board worked that job a time or two and could tell us for certain what was on those trains, but I know the pickups were, pretty sure Pintos were too.

ON MY SIDE OF THE TRACKS...

Not much going on here over the last week...:119: ...:eek:ops: .

i did order the NEW Walther's Milwaukee road "Hiawatha" observation car:thumb: , i have always liked that car, but until now it was only available in brass. i plan on making a very small excursion train with it, so I'll be looking for one-two more cars to add to it at the upcoming shows. i wonder what two cars would be best to go with the observation for small excursions, a Diner?, 26 seat Tap lounge car?, 52 seat coach?, 30 seat Parlor car?...any ideas?

I'm headed to Janesville tomorrow, might stop by WSOR or UP, depending on the weather:119: , if i get any shots I'll post 'em tomorrow:winki: .

Hello Deano---been a while since I've responded but I have been following your thread on a regular basis---always a treat and I thank you and your faithful followers for all your contributions---interesting you mentioned the Hiawatha observation car---did you know the CNR purchased them second hand and used them on their passenger trains---Doctor Wayne and I saw the car at the LHS the other day and wondered if Walthers might do a run in CN colours---too modern for me though as they were painted in the grey/black theme only---anyway keep those pictures coming---thanks again and regards to your Dad---Nutbar

nutbar, THANKS for posting:mrgreen: , it helps let me know that SOMEONE is actually reading this thread:winki::smilie: . as for the Hiawatha cars, i knew a Canadian road now owned them, only i thought it was CP:eeki: . Kevin has current shots of the Hiawatha observation car posted in the "Fallen Flag Freight" thread:thumb: . when my Hiawatha Observation car comes in this week, I'll post some pics of it.

Love the old style Autorack Deano :thumb: :thumb:

ON MY SIDE OF THE TRACKS...

Well, i went to Janesville today to stop at Best Buy to pick up the last three DVD's i needed to complete my "Dirty Harry" collection:thumb: .

the weather was real nice temperature wise, but kinda hazy out, not good for taking pics, but none the less, since i was in Janesville i figured i would get some shots. WSOR was really busy, i took a few new shots of #4025 while there...

DSC02428.JPG

#4009 the Lucy Stone Gardner Memorial engine rolled in with a real neat mini covered hopper in the consist...

DSC02437.JPG

as i was crossing the UP, WSOR, ICE interchange tracks i come across a sign i haven't noticed before nailed to one of the ties...

DSC02470.JPG

no sooner then i got back to the parking lot i was parked in, and three BIG UP GE units came barreling down the tracks headed for UP's yard:eeki::mrgreen: , sadly i was to close to the tracks so i was unable to get good shots of the engines:frowns: , but heres what i got...

the UP freight had about 70 hoppers in the consist, MANY of them were fallen flag freight, like this...

DSC02476.JPG

there were MANY MORE fallen flag covered hoppers, i was only able to get shots of a few of them though, the train was just going by to fast to get all of them. i will post the cars i was able to get shots of in the "Fallen Flag Freight" thread later tonight:thumb::smilie: .

Lucky for me i seen all that action, and got all those pics in less then an hour:mrgreen: .

Till next time...Stay on track:winki::smilie:

Deano-
Great Shots! Always love seeing UP Flag Units! I love that picture of the end of UP maintenance and how the ballast looks more oil covered to the right of the sign, makes you wonder who does more maintenance :)

I love real world photos, never see trains around here. Our train club is going to Vegas on the 15th, hopefully will get to see some real trains down there as well.

THANKS Scott!:wav::mrgreen:

the track that UP sign was on, was on one of WSOR's interchange tracks, which is right next to the ICE interchange track. i was quite surprised to see it there, since UP's interchange tracks are on the right of UP's mainline, then on the left of UP's mainline is WSOR's interchange tracks, and the ICE interchange track.
a simple way to tell each roads tracks is by the color of the ballast each road uses:winki: . UP still uses CNW's famous "pink lady" ballast(though i always thought it looked purple-ish:119: ), look at the ballast in the pics i posted with the UP engines on it to see what i mean:winki: . i guess UP does the maintenance on ALL the tracks at the front of the interchange though:confused: .

going to Vegas eh, be sure to take TONS of UP pics:thumb::mrgreen: .
