Need some window screen??

Yesterday while I was trying to find some of my hobby items I have in storage --- did not have a lot of luck --never found any of my Floquil paint -- got about 75 bottles somewhere, some of it MIGHT still be good , I hope . At 4 bucks or so a 1/2 oz bottle for polyscale or whatever they sell now its gonna hurt to have to replace them all if I don't locate them. I remember seeing a post somewhere about "craft paints" -- whats the dope there ?

OH -- I forgot what I was posting about . Anyway while searching I came across a large piece of fabric that I picked up God knows where , but it is perfect to make window screens in HO scale . I have taken as good a pic of it as I can considering the small size of the weave , it is brass colored .

I have a big chunk of it , more than I will EVER use if some of you want a six inch or so square of it ( again actually a good supply considering how little a piece makes a screen door in HO) let me know & I'll send you a hunk.
I think perhaps I may use some painted black for radiators in the junk yard?

Don't ask what it is or where to look for it or buy it, I don't have a clue where I got it, it's just one of the thousands of things I, like every modeler, saw one day & glomed onto.

Dave, yeah, have some material that looks about like that. It's gift wrap ribbon, so not as large, but workable - don't know what the material is or how it reacts to Floquil or water-base paints. Have you tried coloring it ? Bob C.

Also try metal coffee filter baskets. I recently switched back to paper filters just because I could pick the whole thing up and toss it and the grounds in my compost bin. I had been using the metal one since it was easy to rinse out but although I was saving paper, I was dumping many grounds down my disposal and would rather see them in do some good in the garden. The paper ones I use now are all natural, unbleached, chemical free and cheap. So in the spirit of recycle/reuse, I will some day devote the very fine mesh screen from my old metal basket to create a screen door/window, etc. There's probably enough to do a few HO windows & doors and it's already nicely weathered, courtesy of Starbucks.

Well, not having found my floquil paints yet , I went to the Dollar Store today to get a bunch of the craft paints that a friend told me they had. 4 oz bottles of acrylic at a buck each, got 24 of em --- hope they work, I'm going to try thinning them with windex like someone on here suggested.
One thing I still need is powdered Tempra paint , tried Michaels, asked two cute little cheerleader types about it --- got a blank stare -- finally found a lady about my age that at least knew what it was --- they don't have it any more. Dick Blick lists in on their web page -- but it's "out of stock" , I'll see if they can order it tomorrow. I just hope that Plaster of Paris is still made!!

Anyway , what I DID find was this nice "spatter guard" for a buck! It's 15 inch in diameter & made of pretty fine metal screen. Take a look. Probably the same thing is at most of the Dollar Stores-- get one while they last!! sign1

Lucky for us N-scalers - the wife's discarded pantyhose work very nicely. The fabric can be gently stretched to achieve any mesh size needed from window screen to industrial chain link and more, and it's free.

You know , I had completely forgotten about the nice mesh in panty hose. I used to use them to cover RC airplanes with years ago. They wouldn't be free for me , no wife to snag them , but still a good idea --- Panty hose -- not a wife .:p

Just be sure to smile nicely at the salesgirl when you buy them!

I already found a use for the screen in the spatter guard.
I made a grill for one of the junk yard cars with it. I made a surround with some .025 square wire, soldered it to the screen, then removed the verticle strands & left only the horizontal ones to make grill bars. It will go in the Hot wheels custom Ford truck I'm converting into a Hudson truck I showed in the Really Bashed Car thread below.
