Hi all,

Does anyone know why, or have any ideas why Kato has such a slim selection of F40PH locomotives? I'd love to buy a couple engines for my layout since I hear they are great. BUT I'm SO not thrilled about painting over a $90 model!

Didn't BOTH of those paint schemes die years ago?

The F40ph died years ago. I think the only ones still in service are gutted to be used as cab cars in push-pull commuter service, and I think most of those have been replaced with regular cab cars.

Errr... no. The F40PH has been retired by Amtrak, but commuter lines still use them. I think NJT still does. And, of course, VIA Rail's fleet is still predominantly F40PHs.

The thing with Kato is that they do everything in limited runs. Kato's F40PH is no longer in production.

Amtrak DID retire their F40PHs, and scrapped most of them, but they converted 2 or 3 of them to "cabbage" cars. They removed the prime mover, filled the fuel tank with concrete, and cut a huge door onto the side that slides up like a garage door. They are used as cab cars and have cabs and working lights, but they are used as baggage cars too hence the name "cabbage" from "cab" and "baggage"

The cabbage cars are unique to and only operate on Amtrak's Downeaster service (Boston, Massachusetts - Portland, Maine)

Right on...
While I would buy a Phase 4 Amtrak F40ph, I am mainly interested in the commuter rail schemes.

Any of these roadnames with living F40PH would be great!

But especially MBTA...with the new paint scheme! http://www.railpictures.net/viewphoto.php?id=224203&nseq=25

Yes, I would very much like one in the MBTA scheme. However, the picture you have linked is NOT a F40PH. It's a F40PH-2C. The "old scheme" is still around for the F40PHs. The "new scheme" is for the F40PH-2Cs. They are longer than regular F40PHs. EMD built the original F40PHs without a seperate HEP generator. Instead, HEP is generated directly off the prime mover which means they are louder and consume more fuel. The F40PH-2C was built with a seperate HEP generator (a caterpillar engine) and are longer in length to accomodate it.

Thanks Diburning...I think you've mentioned this to me before in my North Station thread. I'm not a super-die hard for 100% accuracy in my models...but it seems more and more that there is a significant difference. Has any manufacturer produced the F40PH-2C yet? If not are there any plans available?

Oh and by the way. There are many more cabbages than you mention! There are quite a few out in Chicago being used like the downeaster...and California as well.

As I understand the post, you want Kato to re-run the F40ph in additional paint schemes. This is a model Walters has also done. If I am misunderstanding the points made in the thread, please correct me. I'm not a diesel kind of guy.

Nevertheless, the following applies to any desired model.

1) Have you contacted Kato with your request?

2) As a small Japanese company primarily focused on models of Japanese prototype, perhaps Kato doesn't have information on the paint schemes in question. Do you have photos and drawings and perhaps even specifications to help Kato make an accurate model? I have seen this approach work in the past. A modeler desires a model of a particular prototype. He approaches a manufacturer for which the desired model does not represent much change in tooling. The modeler provides an information package with dated photographs (because most prototypes change over time), drawings, and specs to the extent possible. Said manufacturer makes model, and it sells well because the information provided helps the manufacturer avoid glaring errors and criticism.

3) The process is further enhanced if you guarantee some sales with deposit money.

Most model railroad locomotive and car manufacturing starts out exactly this way. A group of friends (may only be one or two people) decide on a model they want, gather the information, gather the upfront money required, commission a manufacturer (may be themselves), and sell the excess production.

becoming part of the solution instead of part of the problem...

Yes, but what I meant is that if they made one, then I'd buy it. If they don't want to make one, then I am ok with not having one. It's not like I just have to have it.

Also, Kato is the only company that has made a correct F40PH with the correct number of stanchions and the correct positioning of the front truck. Bachmann Spectrum, Walthers Trainline, and Life-Like are all inaccurate. Kato, Bachmann Spectrum, Walthers Trainline, and Life-Like are the only manufacturers of the F40PH, and none of them are currently doing any production runs of it right now.

Fred,
You bring great ideas to the table. I have no problem speaking up to the manufacturers, I can certainly forward a list to Kato. Are there any other roadnames they should consider?

And Yes, Walthers has a nice selection....I currently have 7 Walthers F40PH locos...I really like F40ph's i just want to have a better running engine with a decent shell.

Sorry for complaining...I was just hoping to find out if others felt the same way.

Kato has many of their shells available undecorated for reasonable prices. I don't know if the f40ph is one since they have not offered it in quite a few years. If it is available, have you considered getting a Kato undecorated shell and putting it on another mechanism?
