Transformers G1: Hot Rod Papermodel Statue

Hi Everyone

I'm relatively new and not posted much at all here but I've silently admired the great work that is posted and discussed. I do love designing and building papermodels, especially models that resonate with my childhood icons. The Transformers were a big part of my younger years so it made sense that I make something that would pay tribute to it.

I've been working on a model of Hot Rod as he appears in the 80s movie and am just about done. He was definitely my favorite character as a kid and thus I just had to make a model of him. I designed him mostly from screen captures and tried to incorporate as many details as I could.

Here are some snapshots of the 3d views I took at one point. I'll post some build pics later as well.

Update: model files uploaded (now with instructions too)

V5 and G1, thanks for your comments .

As promised, here are some more pics. It is actually the completed test build of the model just posing for the camera. I did a lot of post texturing and touchup after exporting from meta. I admit its not the cleanest build in the world, but hopefully I'll get better as I make more.

I tried to give Hot Rod a kind of relaxed yet dynamic standing position. I really wanted him to closely resemble how he looked in the cartoon. His arms/legs don't move but his head does. I just had a little fun making him pose for the camera with a few head tilts.

I'll make him available for download once I finish some last minute tweaks and come up with some instructions.

Again thanks for your gracious comments.

V5, I really like your voltron work (it was one of my inspirations) :thumb:. Lovely detail work on that one. Nothing wrong with going back and redoing some work but I like your progress so far on Optimus and Megatron.

G1, yeah, I liked the way Hot Rod turned out that I will definitely try some other ones. The problem is there was so many darned transformers in the movie I almost don't know where to start. I want to make them all!! hamr

Since the more popular ones like Optimus, Megatron, Soundwave, Rachet are done (or in progress), I think I'd like to do some that haven't been done before (or at least I haven't seen em).

Honestly, I was thinking of Springer as my next one. He was probably my second favorite in the movie.

Here's a list of ones I'd like to do (might take me a while though, Hot rod took me a few months off and on):

1) Springer
2) UltraMagnus
3) Arcee
4) Cyclonus
5) Star Scream
6) Jazz
7) Kup

I could go on. . .

loudog49,

Well well that's a great list that's hard to choose from :p

My vote is Cyclonis but Springer is cool to :D

Of course Starscream is the coolest IMO ;)

I agree there are so many great Transformers it's hard to choose.

Oh let's not forget Wreckgar :p

Can Arcee make it to the head of the list ? Transformers card models need a little diversity, if you know what I mean.

Very nice looking model indeed. Big T-former fan here as well. I only wish i knew how to create them rather than just build them. Oh well. Keep up the great work. I look forward to downloading these as they become available!!!

That's an interesting point. I'll consider it. Arcee will be one of the tougher ones since she's very curvy . She'd be a great companion to Hot Rod though. What did she say to Hot Rod in the movie, something about needing to stay close to her. . . They definitely have some chemistry.

Holy WOW!!!! I would definitely like to know when you're releasing this! Hot Rod looks AWESOME!!!

I used to watch Transformers with my son when he was little. I would love to build this and send it to him!! The Transformers movie used to be his babysitter, sort of. It'd be cool for him to keep my son company again now that he's away in the Air Force....

Thanks, Rob, for the comments  I have a dream...and that dream is to one day see all our beloved transformers available in paper form. With all of us papercrafters working on it, it seems like we'll see this become a reality one day.
