Wayne & Jason, just checked out the links:winki: , THANKS! AWESOME STUFF:thumb:

i seen the engines from your plant Wayne:mrgreen: . i cant believe how many UP & Wisconsin central engines they had. i liked BOTH you guys links, EXCEPT the Larry's Trucks one you posted Wayne:eeki: , i almost had a heart attack seeing all those UP engines cut up:cry: . (thinks to myself, "you didn't see that, block it out, block it out..." )

THANKS GUYS!

One of these days I'm going to make it up to see the Western Rails one in the flesh. The Mrs. is usually along on every trip up to Spokane, though, and driving around to take pictures of trains isn't her idea of fun :p

At least she doesn't begrudge a stop at the train shop.

Deano, Wayne’s great idea of a railroad museum like the IRM was the first thought I too had when I read your post. Would be a good way to display all kinds of engines on your layout.

Here is another idea. How a bout a leasing company like Watco ( Watco Companies ), which could have their locomotive shops on your layout (Watco’s locomotive shops are in Jacksonville, FL). So this company would not need extra trackage like a shortline on your layout except the tracks for the shops. Your leasing company could offer switching services like Watco does. You could make up a paint scheme for your leasing company and paint your two unpainted engines in that scheme and patch some of the other engines.

hi Deano---As a faithful follower of this thread,I was very pleased to hear of your plans to expand the Rock Valley Sub northwards with a possible interchange with the Elora Gorge and Eastern. As you know, the Canadian National Railway also has an interchange with the EG&E,so it would be very easy to include the CNR in your expansion.Unfortunately, your timeframe is later than the late 50's that I model, but did you know that the CNR has preserved many of the locomotives that ran on the EG&E.Because of the strong relationship between the CNR and the EG&E,many of these preserved locomotives often run on the EG&E in excursion service today.
I recall a previous thread that Big Ed spent some time on the EG&E and was instrumental in having some of the EG&E U-boats transferred to the Rock Valley Sub.Did you know Big Ed also used to ride in the cabs of all the CN locomotives whenever they were in service on the EG&E.I'll bet all it would take is a call from Big Ed to Doctor Wayne and the CN would gladly run these locomotives southward to the museum and continue right to the Rock Valley Sub.BTW,#4100 is one of those locomotives that has been preserved.
Great thread Deano,it helps us to live our dreams---Nutbar

How did I know there was a future expansion planed?:p Anyways, it sounds like your current problem was one I have: the need to run a bunch of locos which all come from different roads, time periods, and backrounds. I solved the problem in making the Riverside Railroad, the shortline that runs all my hodepodge of railpower, modeled unintentionaly after the Ohio Central, a real life RR that runs outated steam and desiels in both fantrip AND profitable industry service (heck, they even have an RS3 I think that still runs). They repaint their engines into an Ohio Central scheme, but some of their engines remain in their original liveries. I recomend that you repaint or "patch" one engine for your made up RR at least to have the shortline established, like what I did with Riverside # 1116 (although the entire repaint was forced by the original gold paint, a picture of that should be earlier in this thread with the unpainted WSOR switchers.)

Oh yeah, if you need any stories/excuses for your engines, I've gotten pretty good at 'em if you want something more colorfull than just buying the loco.

Wayne, Jason, Kurt, nutbar, Jim and CNWman, THANK YOU SO MUCH for all the ideas:thumb: , ALL are doable, and i now have much to think about and consider:winki: , THANKS!

...Heres what i was thinking, in the "tales and lore" of the RVS, i have mentioned Big Eds brother in law, Fred, he was the head mechanic on the RVS, I'm thinking Fred, who happened to be a miser mind you, has left UP's RVS, and started a shortline that runs from Beloit to the Canadian border. i am unsure of the shortlines name at this point, perhaps something like "Beloit, Rock Valley & Northern" or something to that effect.

nutbar, YOU, my friend, are just to kind, THANK YOU!

I gotta say WHOA, stop the train, on the possible interchange with the EG&E though, i couldn't do that without express written consent Via a PM from Wayne, thats why i just mentioned, if i do go with a shortline, that it would go to the "Canadian border":winki: , that keeps things open for...things:winki: .
it sounds though like YOU have been gracious enough to open the door for my "shortline"(if i end up going with that)to have an interchange with YOUR CN:thumb: , and i DO THANK YOU for that:mrgreen: , this can make for some neat stories, and can help in a few other ways:winki: . i really don't want to tie in with ANYONES layout to closely, the RVS is REALLY all about the UP in Wisconsin, but having an occasional "meeting" with "other" roads really helps bring in motive power that the UP doesn't have:thumb: ...thats IF i end up going with a shortline, you guys have gave me other options to ALSO consider.
AGAIN, THANK YOU VERY MUCH NUTBAR!

ON MY SIDE OF THE TRACKS...
Well, its official, I'm lazy:eeki: , cripes, this is like the 5-6th weekend i planned on going to Janesville to railfan, and it just didn't happen:eek:ops: .
i DID go to the yards in South Beloit today though. ICE had only one engine in the yard, "the city of S. Beloit", but it was right behind their office, so no shots of it, the rest of their engines must have been somewhere between Beloit and Janesville.

The UP yard in South Beloit had three engines there, two we have seen before, and a NEW ONE i haven't seen, #1361. i have posted all three below:winki: . i also posted three freight car pics for those of you that might want to use them for weathering ideas:thumb: . notice the 70's "bar codes" on the first two, man it just makes my day to find cars with those on them...its easy to make me happy isn't it:119: .

A GREAT TIME was had at dads today:mrgreen: , we didn't do any work on the layout, but had a real blast with both of us running trains:thumb: , like dad said, you just cant beat DCC:winki: .

the real high point for me was running my Intermountain AC-12 WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS! WOO HOO!:headbang:
That engine is so darn picky, but it ran like a dream today. it pulled 20 cars up a 1% grade and probably could have pulled several more. don't get me wrong, its not fast at all, it tops out at about 40-45 scale mph, but she didn't bog down and no wheel slip, she was steady as a brick for all of the 30 times she went around the layout:mrgreen: .

Dad had a real blast:thumb: , he ran his CNW MP15DC, Milwaukee Road F7, and his CNW GP30.
I, on the other hand, ran a whole slue of my stuff:mrgreen: . Here is a list of what i have thats "currently touring" dads layout, the engines with a * by them are the ones i ran today:mrgreen: .

1- *SP AC12(Intermountain)
2- *FM Trainmaster demo TM4
3- *RSD-15 GBW
4- *UP Y3
5- *CNW RS32
6- CNW DL-109
7- CNW F7 Commuter
8- UP Areotrain
9- Pioneer Zephyr
10- Milwaukee Road Pacific
11- Big Boy
12- UP Challenger(1 of 2)
13- *Veranda Gas Turbine

Hard to believe theres any room for dads engines is there:toug::119: .

3 shots from dads are below, the last one is a progress shot of the NEW station we are putting in, not done, but its getting there. sorry for the poor lighting, need to work on the lighting at dads:eek:ops: .

TILL NEXT TIME...STAY ON TRACK!

Awesome shots...particularly of that UP turbine....Just overwhelms the whole scene...:thumb:

Following up on the nature of your RR...From the very beginning I had it in mind that sooner or later I would have a Super Chief train whooshing its way on the RR, (just passin' thru...) and I would also need to have an excuse for running my UP's...So I set it up in New Mexico...a locale that could conceivably see both of those roads running on "my" rails....

Deano, don't you have a "Gern Industries" sign on your layout? Coulda sworn the Canadians had already invaded the RVS...sign1

Is it just me, or are those two spurs with boxcars on them too close to each other? The Burlington boxcar looks like it's touching the gray reefer behind it.

Gus, Jim and Zachary, THANKS GUYS!

Gus & Zachary, that Gas Turbine is "currently" my most prized engine:thumb: , though i have a feeling that will change soon:winki: .

Kevin, NO selective compression there, its just an optical illusion, there is plenty of room between those cars:thumb: .

ON another note, looking all the prototype pics i have taken over the last few years, i thought #1361(the first pic i posted in post #580 on the last page)was a familiar number, ends up, IT SURE IS!

UP #1361(pictured below) was a Rio Grande:eeki: , heres pics of it i took at the Harvard yard in Janesville a couple yrs ago.

Upon further review, units 1360 and 1362 are also D&RGW units, while 1430 is an ex SP unit. You seem to have a lot of units with great history up your way

THANKS for the info Jim!!!:thumb:
i knew #1430 was an SP, the rear tail light really gives that away:winki: , but i had no idea that #1360 & #1362 were EX-Rio Grandes:eeki: , again, THANKS!
pictured i am RE-POSTING #1430, #1362 and i ALSO have a shot of #1360 i took this past winter, though its NOT a great pic:eek:ops: .

i am currently looking for #1421, it was shipped out to Jenks Yard early last winter for a repaint, i heard its back in the Harvard yard, so theres a real good chance it will make it to South Beloit:winki::mrgreen: . i am posting a shot of it i took in S. Beloit a year or two ago.
