I have had a Linux web server machine running for years and it has never needed to be rebooted, including when the OS has been upgraded. Try that, Windows!
Let's see, my brand new Vista machine is rebooted about once a day, sometimes twice when I find it looses my IP address and can't repair it. Is it my router's fault? Is it my ISP's fault? I can't believe it's MS's fault. When I upgraded to SP1, my machine must have rebooted itself at least a half-dozen times, each time with the terse message to not touch the machine while it was upgrading. That went on for a good hour and then some.

Oh, my XP machine had to be rebooted several times a day for various reasons, mostly for locking up.

A machine you never have to reboot sounds great. I should have time in the next few days to try out Linux on my XP machine. I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Servers and Desktops are differant in many respects. Rebooting is at an extreme minimum still. You will experiance some hangups but it will be much much less then Windows, I can only speak for the distro i use though.
I use mandriva as my first linux distro and couldn't get enough support to keep it.

I received the Ubuntu live cd yesterday. It booted up and ran great on my Vista computer. In fact, I am impressed. It found my video, sound and wireless router with no problem, even my all-in-one printer. I was able to connect to the net first thing and all I had to do was start Firefox. When I installed this router, I went through hell with Vista to get it working. I am going to keep testing for a few more days, and if all goes will, I will partition my hard drive and do an install.

Ask advice about partitions use the Ubuntu forums and I will help too.

Partitioning is also considered erasing sometimes so be sure before you attempt to partition what you want to accomplish with the resources you have.

Loren,

I'm glad you like Ubuntu and that it detected all your hardware.
Linux came a long way. I started with Redhat 7.3 6 years ago. I remember spending at least 4 hours to install it.
If you decide to install Ubuntu on a hard disk , I would like to make 2 suggestions:

1) Get the new version that was released 3 days ago. It is version 8.04.
It is a LTS version ( Long Time Supported ). That means that contrary to other versions, it will be supported for 3 years for the desktop and 5 years on the server.
The "regular" versions are ( I think ) supported for only 1 year.

2) If you can afford it, I highly suggest to get a 2nd hard disk drive in your system and to have it dedicated exclusively to Ubuntu ( or other Linux flavor ).

Just let me know if I can be of any help

Ok BT, I took your suggestion (Thank You) and bought a 500 gig drive. Man, are they cheap now.
Before that, I tried an install and Ubuntu seemed to hang where you migrate your other programs. I quit and I seem to not have hurt anything. Anybody know why it hung or what happened? And what to do next time?
Any how, I have to get a sata power adapter cable tomorrow before I can install the new drive.

You know I've never prefered Windows. I have to say though, my XP media center comp is the most robust unit I've ever had. No problems ever. my 3 other XP & my newest vista comp are all having issues.

Performance itself will get you im sure. try out live CD. You can burn their dvd /cd and it is the Live CD already. Just try it without erasing a thing.

I am telling you each program you use, it is either on ubuntu or a better alternative is available. Oh yeah ok one more benefit. No more going to the website to get that program. Install and update all prgrams right from the OS terminal or a program manager already installed.

RonP has a very very valid point here. With Ubuntu, you don't have to chase for updates. The Ubuntu updates manager for any installed software is just 1 mouseclick away.

Not only that but other linux distros you often find people saying not to update because of conflicts. This has never been an issue with me and ubuntu.

I've been running Linux for years. The wife won't give up Windows, so we dual-boot.

In the past I've used Mepis, PCLinuxOS, and a few others, but the advancements Ubuntu has made in the last year have been outstanding, and is now my distribution of choice.

I like the fact that it loads FAST, I don't need to install a driver for every piece of hardware I buy (clogging up the taskbar), and for me, it just works. Sure it takes some tweaking now and then, but Windows
takes far more work to get running properly.

YeeeeeHaaaaaaaw. I am using Ubuntu Linux now! Once I got the new hard drive in, it was an easy install. No hardware to configure, no video drivers to fight with, nothing. Well, I did need a updated video driver, but Linux had it, downloaded it, installed it, and I just sat there and watched. And you won't believe all the free programs that are available. Any program you could ever want! Right now I am one happy camper! Almost as good as getting a now loco!

When you get time goto the System tab and then Administration. In their is Synaptic Package manager you can put flash in the search line and get it their.
Better yet here is a tutrorial with most of what you need to work with.
