Yeh' quite a story behind this beauty.
I was over at a feller' i had got to know pretty well at our local swapmeet house who also did custom painting' having my GN. Q2 2184 painted .
We were chatting away while i inspected my engine and he said Larry' seeing as your from Minnesota i have something you might be interested in,And he dug around in his closet and pulled out the most pathedic looking engine i ever saw.
Someone must have painted it with a 8 inch brush with old weathered black paint the decals were so crooked and lopsided the guy must been a alcoholic going thru withdrawl with the worlds worse case of the shakes 'lol .
I looked at it and said thanks but Ahhh' I do'nt think so!
So he said tell yeah what I'll do...I'll clean'er up and paint it any way you want. OK says I and if i like it I'll buy it. but $275 is as high as I'll go.
Of course this was back in 1981. But as you can see I did buy it and its been one of my prizes ever since.
Now' if i can just convince people that NO ITS NOT A BIGBOY!!! sign1

As a little kid, my dad educated my brother and I as to the pecking order of the DM&IR 2-8-8-4s and the 4-8-8-4s...and to this day...I don't think the UP articulates stack up very well against the NPs, GNs, SPs (cab normals), C&Os, and Virginians.

The green boilers on those beauties are just great. I don't think enough railroads painted their boilers green. If I ever get myself a Rio Grande 2-8-2...it'll have to have a green boiler.

I just delivered the second color to my South Park mogul tonight...it was very amateurishly painted black and lettered for the "Oxon Hill RR"...with very apparent decal films. I'm sure I got a good deal on it ($280...much like your 2-8-8-4...ignoring inflation)...because of the paint. Amazing what a big deal in makes in pricing.

Speaking of the C&O I just recieved a new copy of The Allegheny' Lima's Finest.
Are you aware the boiler on a Big Boy would slide right inside that of a Allegheny ? After really looking at the pictures in this book you realise how huge that Lima built boiler really was :twisted:

I wasn't aware, but I'm not surprised :mrgreen:

Over a thousand horsepower more powerful than the Big Boys...and at a higher speed...they could move more freight by far. And then there is the whole scale house cheating by Lima...so that they were probably heavier too. Makes for an awesome locomotive. They were a nice extreme example of modern power. Having played inside the Lima Locomotive Works as a little kid, I'm inclined to have a soft spot for them :twisted:

You, young whipper-snappers want to see some real power? I'll show you some real power. This is the ATSF 2-10-10-2 with 'Whale-back' tender produced by Westside Models. Not a successful loco; in fact, it was soon cut up to make two decapods apiece.

Ed, is that HO or O? Very nice regardless.

My favorite AT&SF articulateds were the 2-6-6-2s with hinged boilers (and high drivers?). I think those were cut up into 2-6-2s if I recall...but I'm not going to pretend to know enough to even be dangerous about AT&SF articulateds :mrgreen:
