Hi Guys

Well I never got anything done on the last layout because I was always at the girlfriends, this left me with two options, leave her and build trains, or move3 in with her.
Let me just say I have far less money now :mrgreen:

Anyway I built the first of three tables last night, I used old lumber from my last table, and from an Ikea bookshelf that the girlfriend didn't want anymore after seizing mine.wall1

The tables are 3'W x 3' 6" L X 3' H and will form an L shape

Hi...It's always good to see someone get started in building a layout..!! Just a couple of observations...
You'll need to put some bracing on those legs or you're going to have a wobbly table. The legs and bracing should be glued to the frame, as well.
You don't say what scale you'll be modeling in nor what kind of layout you propose to build, but 36" wide is going to be kind of tight for curves. You'll have 16"-17" radius max, which will limit the kind of engines and rolling stock you can use...
Do you have a plan..?? If not, STOP building tables and concentrate on that so you can visualize how it's all going to fit....
Just my $0.02 worth...GOOD LUCK..!!

Hey thanks for the input, I have the brace's already cut, just not on yet.
I will be modeling in N scale, My track plan is sketch on paper, I am free handing this as it will have every few structures and more open land. the sketch can be found on my older thread, I'm not building the mountain part until I get more space in the future to put it. as far as turns for now there won't be any until I can expand. For those who haven't followed my other layout, I am modeling free hand the area between Edmonton and Jasper, CN will be for Freight, and Via Rail will have a passenger service with a vintage 4-8-2 for a classic mountain tour:rolleyes:. I just bought a new Kato CN SD-40-2, $69.99 USD when I bought it the Canadian dollar was on par, so total cost with shipping is $88.69.

Well I started laying track today

On the First picture I have made a staging area with double through track for later expansion. Second photo is where the double main line continuse's west out of town towards the mountains. The third photo is where the farm and prairie will be. Photo four shows the area of the river crossing and foot hills before the Rockies in a later expansion, there will also be a lumber camp and a lake here. I haven't decided yet If I will allow the train to loop back in photo four.

Excellent choice! I just purchased that same exact model, same road number too. Should be arriving soon. I'm going to lash her up with my CEFX AC4400.

All of this looks quite impressive. I also quickly browsed through your website as well (Macs are great, aren't they!). Since it's so late right now, I didn't have time to thoroughly check things but your scenery and plans look really good. Keep us posted! Rob

Sounds like you made a good sacrifice and got the best of both worlds! :thumb: However I wasn't so lucky, so lucky me, I still have me and my train's and making the move into my new career of truck driving. I think I might purchase some N scale stuff and build me a small little switching layout on foam and put it in the top bunk in my truck so I can play and still be away! :twisted:

Layout is looking great. Keep it up! :thumb:

Thanks guys, I should have more pictures up today, I/m finishing laying the track, then I have to rip it up again, lay the road bed, and then the track and solder. If you guys want to hear my tutorial on soldering, listen to episode 7 of the model rail cast (link below) or I will have it on my site some time today.

Well I finished the Roadbed today. Only the Mainline and spur to the train station have roadbed. The rest of the track is staging and as result is lower in elevation.

Next I will be soldering and cutting track, If you are following along on my Website I will post lots of photos of the steps and possibly a video. :thumb:

Nice Canadien National SD-40 too. and the price is interesting
Where did you purchase it ?.
I just checked the website at Pacific Western Rail Systems in B.C. and they sell the SD40 for $99.98 + shipping.

My 1st layout is very small ( 25' X 36' ) so I only run 4 axles CN, CP engines but I really would like to get a Kato CN SD40, it looks so good and I'm sure it runs nicely too.
Looking forward to see more pictures.
