An Age-Old Railroaders Problem

Anyone else out there have a 2:1 rolling stock to locomotive ratio? I seriously have upwards of 30 locomotives and only about 65-70 freight and passenger cars. sign1 Its a sickness, really. You see an engine you really want and without really giving regard to whether or not it fits, you buy it. Multiply that over 15 years in the hobby, and you're in my place.

On the plus side, I can make 30 2-car trains. Anyone else?

i hear what your saying Kanawha:winki: , i CURRENTLY have 83 engines:mrgreen: , my engine to freight car ratio is about one engine to 1.5 cars:eeki::eek:ops::119: , your NOT alone:winki::119: .

Some might say i have a problem with it:eeki: , i dont see it:winki: , if i want an engine, I BUY IT, NO PROBLEM!:thumb::toug::mrgreen::119:

Well..........I currently have about 30 locos, 20 of which are RTR right now, the others are in.........lets just say less than running condition

Rolling stock, what's that? About all I have is a few coal hoppers and some 85' flats that are in disarray.

Heck, I don't even have a layout. But I hear the RG&S will be breaking ground on their new engine service terminal (diorama 65" X 22")

I had better get on the ball. I only have ... uh, 6. No, 8. Ooops 11. Man, I have more than I thought... but still no where near the amount you guys have. And to think, I only just got back into the hobby last year.

Oh oh. 11 engines X 15 years... Egads.

Do you breakdown...

the A-B-B-A sets to count as 4 locos? Or just as A/A-B because that'll make the count change by, let's see- I have 3 sets of A-B-B-As alone.

I just made a list- I need help. Not enough fingers and toes.

Now you did it you made me count my engines.wall1 I thought I was doing good. There's 58 in the display case, another 50 or so in boxes and 10 on the layout and 5 out for repair. What can I say ...my name is Trainiac77 and I'm an engine-oholic....... (the name "trainiac" says it all! not to mention I've been collecting for 30 + years! :thumb: just don't tell my wife about the 50 or so in boxes  ) Just remember it's cheaper than therapy!

I think I'm running about 3 rollingstock to 1 engine if you include the passenger cars.

I don't have this problem...yet.

In fact I am looking for some deals on bulk P2k kits so I can increase the size of my rolling stock roster by about another 30 to 40 cars. That will give me roughly 50 cars for 4 engines. However, I would like to get four CN gp's just switch road names every once and a while....so this could be a problem down the road.

It will take me about a week to "take inventory", but my guess is about 4 pieces of rolling stock for each loco. That said, however, there are about 45 B&O hoppers that are only run with one loco. There's 80 wood iced reefers that run with two Clinchfield locos. 50 N&W hoppers that have three locos. Another 50 C&O hoppers that run with 6 locos. 18 pieces narrow gauge (HOn3) that run with 8 locos. Somewhere close to 50 pieces of modern rolling stock, for 17 diesels (GP-9 through BL-20-2) The WP FT A+B F7 has a string of about 8 WP freight cars. The two SP&S Alco C425s have a string of about 12 SP&S freight cars, and the D&H Challenger has 5 D&H freight cars.
What makes the count difficult is the "fleet" of mixed box cars, tank cars, flat cars, Refrigerator cars, gondolas, and hoppers that "the rest" of the locos pull.
On30 is a completely different situation, with only 5 pieces of rolling stock, for 6 locos.

There is a point in time in everyones' train collection when it becomes necessary to create a database just to keep track of the inventory. I did that some time ago when I realized I was buying duplicates! When people ask how big my collection is, I usually reply, "Just one train set."

I'd have to take inventory to work this out. If you count everything -- i.e. the smooth-running, finely-detailed locos as well as the old, really bad ones -- I have 14 British locos and about 10 North American ones. Again, a few of the latter are around 40-years-old, don't run that well and don't have much detail.

So I'd guess that I have about 4 pieces of stock (freight cars as well as coaches) per loco. But that's just a guess.

60 locos and maybe 60 to 70 cars but 10 cranes.....i can only use one loco and maybe 10 cars on the layout lol but large fleet f cranes just incase i have a huge wreck and need a big hook, have like 6 of those alone lol
and i purchasd another dash8-40cw tonight off ebay.......

I'm WAY behind the curve here!
Keep in mind I am only counting the stuff I fun...
I only have 2 running loco's.
BUT...
I also have a few others that I'm not counting. One has been in my possession since I was 6mos old and does not run, the others do run but have the wrong couplers and all.

Now, I have more rolling stock that I don't run when compared to the stuff I do run, mainly because of the whole couplers/trucks thing.

I guess with everything counted, I think I'm still over the 2:1 ratio

I think i just broke the 50 mark, if you count locomotives that still work. Some of them i think are cheating to count, since they are ancient or don't work (and will never be made to work again in all likelihood).

do EMU cars count?

Uhh...let's see...I've got 8 locos and 52 cars, so 52 goes into 8....no wait...52-8 is 53, so 53 into 8 is...no wait, carry the 4....wall1

It's not as cut and dry with me because some of my locos and rolling stock are in the disassembled stage. I will include anything that is reasonably close to running. For my HOn3 line, I have 4 locomotives and 19 cars and 2 cabooses. For narrow gauge, that doesn't seem like a bad ratio.

I have about 15 locomotives and 25 cars on the layout. Of the 15 locomotives, I actively use 5. In addition to the cars on the layout, I have about another 50-60 unbuilt kits and no room for them on the layout. So I guess I need a bigger layout!
