Jim, THANK YOU VERY MUCH! i'm real glad you liked that story:thumb::mrgreen: .

That switcher looks great in Milwaukee garb, Dean, and that pick-up's not too bad, either. ;)
I was nice to see the Big Ed story again, too, and nicer still to hear that there's more steam coming to the Rock Valley Sub. :thumb::thumb: Any hints?

Wayne

Kurt...I love the paint scheme and the 4 long stacks!:thumb::thumb::thumb:...Looks great! btw, I'm still looking in the carpet for the lost part:mrgreen:.
I will also echo Deano's words about looking forward to seeing your new layout come together (I daresay, that we two are not alone in this sentiment).

Deano...Although I am familiar with the "Tales & Lore of the Rock Valley Sub" I am glad that you have re-posted for those who aren't. If you have any other tales or pages in that scrap book, I would love to hear more:thumb::thumb::thumb::winker:. Kudos to both you and Wayne for sharing the history!

Great pics from your dad's layout! I especially like the last one!:thumb::thumb::thumb:

Josh, no, i had a chance to pick one up recently too, but passed on it:eek:ops: .
without looking it up, i am pretty sure one of the black UP switchers was an NW2:confused: , cant remember right off if there was anymore, or what they were though:confused: ...gettin old:eek:ops::119: . why do you ask?, did you just get one?

:deano: -Deano
No, however, I was tempted to get a unit to paint. I have no use for it, but I thought they looked cool.

Well, I finally found my way here. That farmer back down the road a'piece, couldn't remember whether to turn left, or right at the crossroads with the white picket fence. wall1 I'll have to tell him, next as I see him, that you really can get here from there!
The MILW MP15ACs, as I saw them, were in SOO Line "bandit" paint, down in Itasca. I still have most of the stuff I need to kitbash two of the 'ACs. I'll be doing them in New York & Atlantic, today's version of the LIRR freight business.
Deano, Thanks again for posting the module photos. My camera isn't quite up to that kind of quality.
On my way from home, to the GCLaser office, and back, I use Rt 12, and run parrallel to the WSOR from Fox Lake, on up to Richmond. It's rare, but I have seen activity on the line.
I like the new thread! I'll have to try to get in here a little more often. Keep up the good work! :thumb:

The Y3 Has ARRIVED!!!

Steve! , THANK YOU, MY friend:winki::mrgreen: , Glad you liked the repost:mrgreen: . yes, i have more "Tales", and I'll be adding new ones in future posts:winki: .

Josh, those black switchers UP had were neat:thumb: , i am regretting not picking up one when i had the chance:frowns: .

Pete:wav: , i am REAL GLAD you found your way here:thumb::mrgreen: , it just goes to show you, ALL ROADS on the Internet highway lead to THIS thread:winki::119: .
**Folks, the pics i took of Pete's modules are located HERE: http://forum.zealot.com/t153938-post764474/?highlight=Milwaukee+show#post764474 , I STRONGLY suggest you check them out, Pete's an AWESOME modeler:thumb: , and doesn't really post pics of his work to a specific thread, so its hard to find pics of his work, please take the time to check the link out, it'll be worth it:thumb::mrgreen: .

ON MY SIDE OF THE TRACKS...
BIG NEWS on the RVS, more steam to hit the roster:thumb: ...more on this Monday:toug::119::mrgreen: .

Did we miss something:rolleyes::p
...:eeki: ...NO, Jim, you folks didn't miss anything:119: . really i wasn't feeling to hot all week, so i didn't do ANYTHING on ANY of my 1000 ongoing projects:eek:ops: .

You'll find what you were looking for a little further down this post though:thumb::mrgreen: .

*****************************************************
On My Side Of The Tracks...
Well folks, as i mentioned in my response to Jim, i wasn't feeling to hot this last week, so NOTHING got done:eeki::eek:ops: . that really stinks too because it has just put me that much further behind on the many, MANY, MANY(did i say many?:119: )projects i am doing:frowns: . i have about 20 NEW freight cars to weather, i cant count how many engines still need weathering:eek:ops: , i am in the middle of working on my GERN, and like an idiot, i just keep on adding to the list:eek: , will i ever learn?:eek:ops: .
*******************************************************
NEW STEAM ON THE RVS...
Thats right folks, Big ED & Fred have resurrected a UP Y3!!!:eeki: , UP wouldn't have anything to do with resurrecting the BIG BOY or another Challenger, but Big Ed & Fred took it upon themselves to do it, AND DONE IT:thumb: , now their NEWEST project has come to life, resurrecting a UP Y3:mrgreen: . thank god for those incredible foamers on the RVS:winki::mrgreen: .

Big Ed was unavailable for comment, but Fred, the top mechanic on the RVS(he's also Big Ed's brother-in law:winki: ) said: "Big Ed and i were looking to add another steamer to our roster for excursion runs, we both liked Mallets, so we decided the Y3 would be the perfect choice to resurrect:winki: " .
******************************************************
Union Pacific & The Y3...
When i first ordered this engine, i did it solely for the fact i thought they were an AWESOME looking engine, i really didn't know a darn thing about them:eek:ops: . when it comes to steam, the very first person i think of is my good friend Wayne:winki::mrgreen: , so i wrote him telling him of my NEW purchase, he mentioned they were bought from N&W, this was news to me:eek:ops: , so i started looking into this, and here's what i found:

In 1919 N&W purchased 50 2-8-8-2 Y3 Mallets from the American Locomotive Co.(Alco), they were used for coal drags. in 1945 five of the N&W Y3's were sold to the Union Pacific(UP #'s 3670-3674) to help out in the war effort. UP had big plans for these engines, but found them to be almost useless to them:eeki: . the problem was these engines were REAL SLOW, they really couldn't run much faster then 20mph or the frames would crack:eeki: . UP's forte was what?...FAST FREIGHT:winki: , and these engines were far from what UP had hoped for in that department:frowns: . a plus for the Y3 was they could single handedly pull over a hundred car trains, up mountains, down them, it didn't matter, the Y3 was able to do it:thumb: ...at a snails pace though:eek:ops: .

After much testing UP decided to put these engines on the duty they were meant for, coal drags:thumb: ...PROBLEM:eeki: , they were so slow they were clogging up UP's mainline fast freight traffic:eek:ops: . by 1948 UP deemed the Y3 almost completely useless to them, and scrapped all five of them:eeki: .

The ONLY advantage UP seen with the Y3 was that it freed up the faster engines they had running their coal drags, so they could be used for other freight. :winki:
******************************************************
So heres where i am at now...
As you can see by the pics below, this is my NEW Y3 right out of the box, unpainted, unlettered, and NOT set up for UP. i do have the decals for it, and i do have the right parts to make it as UP had them:thumb: .
i have to paint the front of the boiler(stack area), and the bottom of the firebox silver. the engine looks real shiny, and since i have paint work to do on it anyways, i have decided to make this my VERY FIRST steamer to weather:eeki: ...please cross your fingers for me folks:eek:ops: . I am by far NOT the best weatherer around:eek:ops: , but i have done enough cars & Diesels to where i feel they look good enough for me:winki: , but steam weathering, thats a whole nuther ball game i have NEVER played...we'll see what happens:eek:ops: .

Till next time...STAY ON TRACK!:thumb:

Nice steamer project Deano:thumb::thumb: I know the Rio Grande bought some N&W mallets as well, I think they were Y-2s though. They had the same problem, too slow, they used them on pusher service and scrapped them pretty quick.

I have a question, just curious for the answer, the dog house on tenders, i presume they were for the head end brakeman, my question is: did these have heat in them? I'm thinking it would be a long lonely cold ride in the winters:eeki: . in the summer it was probably an OK ride, but the winters..., I'm really curious.

not great pics:eek:ops: , but i took these at the IRM and they are really the only examples of a tender doghouse i have.

THANKS!

Hey, Deano ! That's the FIRST doghouse I've seen on a Vandy tender ! The PRR and N&W had lots of 'em , and with STEAM & electricity both available nearby, would expect heat, though I have no FIRST-HAND knowledge. Believe PRR got some Y-3s also, and likewise used them in drag/ helper service. Will be watching your project(s) with interest ! Bob C.

The Y-3s the Pennsy got, ended up in switching service.
The book, "Norfolk & Western Railway's Magnificent Mallets the Y Class 2-8-8-2s", by William E. Warden, TLC Publishing, Inc. , Route 4 Box 154, Lynchburg, Virginia 24503-9711, has lots of information, and some great photos of the Ys.
i have to paint the front of the boiler(stack area), and the bottom of the firebox silver. the engine looks real shiny, and since i have paint work to do on it anyways, i have decided to make this my VERY FIRST steamer to weather
Deano, The maintenance Dept. made sure that these locos were kept clean, and shiny. You will see dust, usually the color of the surrounding land, and the color of the ballast, up on the lower boiler, and the running gear. The upper boiler will have soot, and some calcium deposits where steam, or water, exits, or leaks. Back around the trailing truck there would be some ash from the ashpan, when it is dumped/shaken down.
The tender will have coal dust, and streaking from water overflow, that occurs when taking on water, as well as some soot on the upper surfaces. Some unpainted, or heavily used surfaces ( couplers, etc) may have some "dusting" of rust.

Bob C.:wav:, THANK YOU so much for answering my question:thumb::mrgreen: , i was beginning to think it was a stupid question:eek:ops: , but i honestly wasn't sure if their was enough room in those little dog houses for anything other then a seat:winki: . and THANKS for the interest in my project/s:smilie: .

Pete:wav: , THANK YOU for the info on the paint & weathering!!!:thumb::mrgreen:

I'm hoping to see the 1630 running again this year. She's been in the shop for too long! Very nice shots! :thumb::thumb:
THANKS PETE!!!
I am hoping the same thing too:thumb: , but i have no idea if 1630 will be running this year:confused: . quite honestly, i have really been itching to go to the IRM & Rochelle:mrgreen: , but the weather just isn't permitting yet:cry: .

i am thinking I'll take us on a "virtual" tour of the IRM this week:winki: , i have TONS of pics i have taken there over the years:thumb: . Sadly, i don't have many pics of the steamers there, except the ones that are on what i call the deadline, and the AWESOME engines in the HUGE barns are impossible to get shots of:frowns: , HOWEVER, i have a good variety of Diesel pics taken outside:thumb::mrgreen: ...sounds like a plan:mrgreen: . we'll take the tour tomorrow or Friday night:thumb: .

Pete, i know your dial-up just like i am:eek:ops: , i will be posting TONS of pics, but they are all low res, so it shouldn't take long for the page to load:thumb: .

I can't think of a better place for my 4000 th post, than here.
Your photo of 1630 shows all her drivers in place. The last time I saw her, the rear driver set had been pulled to repack the journals. She may now be ready to steam again.
The IRM's Shay, had all her tubes and flues pulled last time I saw. I'm hoping to see the shay running again soon. For me, the best time to visit the Illinois Railway Museum, is when steam is running, after Memorial Day.
Looking forward to your virtual tour.

SOME...engines at the IRM

WELL..., i WAS going to give you folks a "virtual tour" of the Illinois Railway Museum(IRM), but as i was going through all the pics i have taken there over the last few years i noticed,...well...i have only taken pics of engines there:eeki::eek:ops::119: , i don't have pics of the MANY other really neat things they have there:eek:ops: , so to do the IRM and you folks justice, you'll have to wait till i go this year to get the REAL "virtual tour":winki::119: . thats OK though, i know EXACTLY what to get shots of THIS YEAR, and you can darn sure bet I WILL pass the NEW pics on to you folks when i get them:thumb::mrgreen: .

What i WILL DO for this post though, is post just a very, VERY, VERY small percentage of SOME of the engines i have took pics of there, over the last few years:thumb::mrgreen: . i have posted some of these pics in various other threads, my apologies to you if you have seen some of them:eek:ops: , other pics in here are some that i have NEVER posted before:winki::mrgreen: .

Like i said, i really cant do the museum justice with this post, i am missing pics of:
the depot
the trolly's & other electrified engines
the passenger cars they have there
the freight cars they have there(though i do have pics of some of them, I'll make that another post)
the MANY RR signs they have there, and a multitude of MUCH MORE.

NOT ALL, but MOST of the engines i have posted below REALLY RUN:eeki: .

PLEASE just sit back, and enjoy the show:mrgreen: , i think i have provided something for everyone:winki: .

Deano, awesome pics. Love that turbine:thumb::thumb: I remember rideing in the cab of TP&W 400 when I was a kid, also think I remeber the rotary plow from then too. Last time I was there was back in the mid 80's.
