Deano, can ya give ma a quick lesson on differences and spotting features on AC vs.DC?
SURE!:thumb: the quickest way you can tell the difference between the to is the MP15DC has an external sand box at the front sides of the long hood:winki: , the MP15AC has a pretty large grill in that spot, instead of external sand tanks:winki: . there are a few other obvious differences, but thats the quickest way i can tell them apart:winki: .

EDIT: EXAMPLES...

Roger, i hope i am understanding what your asking...:eek:ops: .
i once had a friend that was a retired engineer, i asked him a similar question, his reply was...it made no difference:eeki: , the order in which engines of any breed(AC/DC) are hooked up is purely a matter of how they are sitting in the yard:winki: . there really is no "rule" on how engines are hooked up, trunk to tail, tail to tail or trunk to trunk, its all a matter of how they are picked up:winki: . My buddy told me of one time that his lead engine was long hood forward, and they had no way of turning it around in the yard, they had to run that way for about 50 miles before they had a way to turn the unit around:eeki: ...not fun running that way, but they didn't have a choice.

BTW, THANK YOU!, for the link to that AWESOME pic:thumb::mrgreen: .

Madison Train Show Recap...

Make sure to brush up on your train show buying tips!
Kevin, "brush up on them", HEY, i INVENTED and LIVE them:winki: sign1  .

Madison Train Show Recap...
Well, the train show is over for dad and I, we went yesterday:thumb: .

i seen Pete(Sumpter) very briefly, i think he said it was close to a record showing this year:thumb: . though dad and i was saying it just wasn't as good as it used to be:eeki: . honestly, i think that had to do with our situations though, keep in mind dad has been model RRing since 1964, so he pretty much has all he needs, and then some:winki: , and at this time, i only am looking for a very select few items that are really like finding a needle in a haystack:rolleyes: . if we were just starting out, i am sure we would have seen the show in a whole different light:winki: . (BTW Kevin & Cred, i thought of both of you guys about a 100x, there was so much DMIR stuff, it wasn't even funny:eeki: , steam, and diesel:winki: ). i can see dads point on one issue, out of the whole show, we couldn't find one set of Kadee couplers for sale:rolleyes: , thats just nuts:cry: . LOTS of NICE modulars on display though:thumb: .

dad just picked up a magazine at the Kalembach booth, "Model RRing in the 50's" , and that was it for him. i found a few good deals:mrgreen: , check out pic # 1 below, ain't she a beaut! ...no NOT the girl standing by the GP30:toug: , though if you seen the HUGE UP patch on the back of her overhauls you would have thought she was with me:eeki::toug::119: . i drooled over that GP30 for a few minutes wishing i had the money to buy such a thing, then moved on to find some sales:winki: .

I found a UP shirt i had to have, its tough to get UP shirts for me since i ONLY wear black or gray T-shirts, most of the UP shirts are white or some other color i wouldn't be caught dead in:rolleyes: . and of coarse i had to get my 500th:rolleyes: UP coffee cup:119: (pic 2).

i got a GREAT DEAL on an GP9:thumb: , the pic you see of it(pic 3) is right out of the box, i haven't done a thing with it yet.

the REAL deal of the show for ME was getting Con-Cor's AREO TRAIN:eeki: , UP's "City of Los Vegas":thumb: (pic4). i know, some of you are scratching your head on this one, "but Deano, you already have a "City of Los Vegas" (pic 6), TRUE, but mine was made with the old Varney shells, and i used an Athearn SW for the motor and truck, the cars were cobbled together with single trucks, sure it ran, but the whole train was really plagued with MANY problems:eek:ops: . i stripped it apart and was going to redo the whole thing, but then Con-Cor come out with it, so i put that project on hold hoping i could get the Con-Cor Version:winki: . sure glad i bought it!:thumb: , the detail is SLAP STUPENDOUS:thumb: , and though it has trouble on two spots of dads layout, i think it will run quite well on my NEW layout i am taking on this summer:winki::mrgreen: .

the last 3 items i bought was a UP covered hopper(pic 5) , and NOT pictured i got a few barrels, and an optivisor, because i just cant see anymore:eek:ops::frowns: .

**That pretty much sums up the show for dad and I:smilie: . my NEXT big post on here: "WSOR's MP15AC's...the Saga continues", good pics, more cool newly learned facts, and a nice added surprise:winki::mrgreen: .

Till next time...stay on track!

Sarge, i agree, that engine is SLAP AWESOME:thumb: , i just wish i had the money to have one...and a place to run it:119: .

Hey Deano....I was going to ask what "vintage" those engines were...To my surprise there's an article in this month's MRR (actually..March) about them....!!! Nice coincidence... (and very nice engines...) :thumb:

WSOR's Milwaukee Road MP15AC's...the saga continues

:wave::wave::wave::wave::wave:
Hi there all, hey Deano, can ya give me a clue to the model of the engine in your last post. I don't know why, I just like the looks.

Joe:thumb:
Joe:wav: , in my last post, i posted two different engines, the first one #1342, is an MP15DC, and the second one #1413, is an MP15AC:winki: . I can see why you like them:mrgreen: , they ARE cool engines:thumb: .

nutbar:wav: , i was wondering if you were following this thread, GLAD to find out you are:mrgreen: . i hope i am touching on topics that you find interest in:winki::smilie: . THANK YOU!, for the complement:mrgreen: .

Gus:wav: , i haven't read the March MRR yet:eek:ops: , dad and i trade off magazines, he gets MRR, i get Classic Trains, I'll be sure and check the article out when i get it:winki: . i am pretty sure the MP series came out in 1974:confused: , but i would have to check to bet on it:119: . Gus, just remember, you seen the action HERE first:winki::mrgreen: .

*******************************************************
**Just a Note:
You folks have probably summized by now that model RRing is just part of the enjoyment i get from trains:winki: . i like to railfan, and the three Roads that run by me are obviously UP, WSOR & ICE, so alot of the stuff on this thread pertains to those roads:thumb: . i understand those roads more then likely are not you folks favorites:eek:ops: , but i hope i am making my railfanning interesting enough to give you folks some enjoyment:winki::smilie: . I love Engines, though i am no expert on them:eek:ops: , and railroad history is of great interest to me too:thumb: .

i hope by combining Model RRing & all my Train interests into this thread, you folks will find some things that interest you too:winki::smilie: .

WSOR's Milwaukee Road MP15AC's...the saga continues...
After going to the Madison train show, dad decided we would stop off at the hobby shop so he could pick up some Kadee #5 couplers(i cant believe we couldn't find ANY at the show:rolleyes: ). Rick(the hobby shop owner) mentioned that one of WSOR's(Milwaukee Road) MP15AC's was in the engine yard at the round house, in primer, and WSOR was using it before it was painted. well, i had my camera on me, so after leaving Ricks we were on our way to see the engine:thumb: .

Arriving at the yard, sure as heck, there it was:mrgreen: ...PROBLEM, i couldn't get any good shots of it because it was smack dab in the middle of the yard:frowns: .
well, i was darned if i was going home empty handed:winki: , so i told dad to hang on a minute, i was trying to find a place to get a decent shot of the switcher, but just couldn't, so i went to the door of the round house, knocked...no answer...OK, "I'll just open the door, pop my head in and ask for permission to take some picks of it":winki: . i don't know about you folks, but the last thing i need is to get in trouble trespassing:119: .

as i opened the door i was greeted by a worker, a real nice guy, and i explained what i wanted to do. the guy invited me in(i have been in the round house before:winki: ) and gave me a small tour of sorts of what they were working on:thumb: . the first engine in stall one was a UP SD40-2 they had bought and was working on, stall two and three had...TWO OF THE MILWAUKEE ROAD MP15AC's on them:eeki: , and stall four had one of their SD40-2's on it. thats right, they were working on 2 of 6 of the Milwaukee Road MP15AC's right there:thumb: . then he explained to me that the engine they were working on/we were standing in front of was in fact the very engine that was stationed at that round house when the Milwaukee Road owned it, #1506, FOLKS, how cool is that, #1506 after all these years was back home:thumb::smilie: . i asked if i could get some shots of #1506 and he said sure, but sadly, the inside of the round house was like a cave, very dark, out of the twelve pics i took of it, only one turned out:frowns: , and its NOT a great shot:cry: (see PIC #1).

After i took the shots that ended up not turning out:frowns::rolleyes: , the guy said he was on break and would escort me to the middle of the yard so i could get shots of the primed ex-Milwaukee Road MP15AC #1501:thumb: . i think i got some pretty decent shots of it:thumb::mrgreen: (see the rest of the shots below). after i took the shots i thanked the guy and was off:winki::mrgreen: .

Now i have taken "before" shots of two of the six units, some "during" the work in progress shots of #1501, and soon i hope to close this chapter with the "after" shots..as soon as they get painted:119: .

**SIDE NOTE:
Notice how the color of the primer makes the engine look like its brass, WSOR uses UP tracks to get to certain places, when WSOR requests permission for that engine to enter UP's Rails, the UP guys usually reply: "yes, permission granted for your Overland model to enter our rails":eeki::mrgreen: , thats TRUE folks:winki: , the UP guys really rib WSOR on the color of that primersign1 .

Till next time...stay on track!
