I've heard people I knew who lived RIGHT by the tracks say that before. I suppose we can get used to just about anything. Not sure how long it would take me though. My wife and I once stayed at a small inn in Stockholm, WI that was a half a block from the tracks and the every-30-minute freights kept us up all night. We were pretty cranky the next day.

When I was growing up, we lived in Fremont with the Western Pacific mainline running right behind the back fence. I didn't even notice the trains unless I was awake and watching trains. I noticed a hopuse near Blue Cut on the Cajon Pass that sits between the U.P. (exS.P.) main and the BNSF main. I mentioned to my wife that I would love to live in that house. For some reason, my wife wasn't impressed with the location of the house!

My wife grew up along the track in fact her dad would jump on the train to go to and from work for the B&O. The first night I slept in the house after we were married a train came through when I was sleeping.

It's on the Lake Pepin part of the Mississippi river on WI 35. Cute little town, lots of scenic views of the river and bluffs along the way.

I know the feeling. It has taken many years to get used to it. And I have had to replace soooooooooooooooo many bricks that rumbled loose over the years that I can't even count that high.
I am actually afrain that one day my house is going to fall on my head.

We currently live less than 100' from CSX's Saginaw Subdivision at the south end of Clyde Siding. Not nearly as busy as it used to be now that there's not much left of GM in Flint and CSX abandoned some of the trackage up farther north. Doesn't help that CSX only goes to Flint Yard and then it's Lake State Railway from there. I do get to see coal trains with a lot of BNSF power though. The only drawbacks to this are that when he's southbound he blows that horn right in our backyard and we had to stop buying the incandescent light bulbs cause I think the vibrations were shortening the lives of the filaments in the bulbs.
We live about a 1/4 mile from the Water Front Main Lines of the CSX and NS. There is a train about every 15 minutes on these tracks and sometimes you can catch and east and west bound at the same time. There are several road crossing near us, so we always here the horns blowing. Just music to our ears!
Spent a night in a state park in Whitefish,MT. It was right at the point where the diesels started to accelerate as they left town. Not much sleep that night.
Conversely, I lived in a large city near an airport and got used to the approach noises of jets to the point that I didn't notice. Except for the occasional pilot who got below the glideslope and suddenly applied power when he looked out the window and saw house lights.

I used to love getting put in the hole at Clyde. We would walk over to this little convenience store towards the north end of the siding.
When did CSX stop running all the way up to Saginaw?? That used to be my home terminal. It is the bane (and main LDE) on my Pere Marquette layout.
Yeah, the store is still there. Once in awhile they will still stop there, sometimes they will even stop at Mcdonalds. They aren't even "in the hole" when they stop sometimes.
I believe CSX sold off the property from Saginaw yard north just this past year, but I could be wrong. I do know that they still have quite a few stored HLCX units sitting in the north end of the yard.
I am almost sad that they got rid of it. A little bit more of the states history tossed aside. That yard, or a large part of it anyways, is well over 100 years old.
I've lived by tracks most of my life. I mind when I was little,my mother would time her washing{wringer washer,filled with a bucket}to the lineup.My father worked the section fro 20+ years .

Yeah, not much traffic in that yard anymore. A lot has changed in Michigan's railroad scene. Just like the Tuscola and Saginaw Bay is now Great Lakes Central Railroad. Central Michigan was bought back a few years ago by RailAmerica which also owns Huron and Eastern in the thumb area. Then a year or so ago CN gave the order to have all GTW locomotives painted in CN colors. So it's like grab pics of the GTW while you can cause it's going away...
The one cool thing is that there's a bridge in Grand Blanc that still says "Pere Marquette Railway" on it.
After my mom and dad were divorced, my brother and I lived with Mom in an appartment that was just 50 yards from a double track. Now I live about 6 blocks from the tain yard. I can hear trains day and night and I love the sound.
