Moose Antler Locomotive

This is a Locomotive I just finished working on made out of Moose Antler. I've never seen one done before so I think it's a one of a kind. I'll be making the coal car, passenger car and caboose also. Very slow going because of the shape of antler its hard to get workable pieces. I have also made buildings out of antler.

Now that looks like a major project! It would appear that you have the first part of the project completed...........First, you shoot a moose!

Please post some progress pics - that looks really interesting.

David, that is nothing short of amazing! The amount of work in those projects is really mind boggling. You are a very talented artist! Thanks for sharing your work.

From the thread title, I first thought this would be a model of an old-time locomotive with antlers on the front, the sort you're more likely to see in a Western movie than reality. This is so much better.

Remember...it's for fun!
Incredible work David! I don't know anything about carving from an antler. do you have to prepare it some how? What tools do you use? I'm fascinated!

No preperation really. You just cut the pieces and work with them. Problem is nothing is flat to start with or straight for that matter. It takes way more time to get a workable piece it seems than it does to actually make the parts. I turned some of it on the lathe, other pieces I carved or cut on the saws. I use a binocular microscope to work on the small pieces as well as any lettering.
Thanks for everyones comments. I'm quite proud of the way it turned out. Many many hours involved just to make the Locomotive (about a month). Now I'm going to start on the coal car. I'll post pics when I'm done.

Sorry, David, I was so impressed with your carving that I neglected to welcome you to the Gauge, wall1 so, welcome to the Gauge.
Are you a model railroader in addition to being a carver?
I'll have to assume that you didn't find the antler in your backyard, as I don't think that there are too many of them in this neck of the woods. We still get the occasional deer in our backyard, being so close to the Niagara escarpment: I'll let you know if I come across any antlers that aren't still attached to a deer.

Thanks Wayne,
No I'm not a railroder but I do like the old trains. Mostly woodworking and carving and going to try my hand at scrimshaw also.
I have friends and family that are always looking for antler for me. If you do come across any I'd really appreicate it.
Not sure where you live but I'm in St Catharines.
Do you do a lot of train building etc? Miniature stuff would be fun to make, I think.
