Hello all,

After a hiadis of a few months and building my 12'X14' shed to house my layout. The steel mill complex is well under way.

I started by scratch building an enormous basic oxygen furnace.Right now I'm working on the walthers EAF & rolling mill ,they are to be mated together for a much larger melt shop.

After these two kits are built.I'll build the rest of the walthers kits.

I'll keep you folks posted on DRSC's progress. This is where I'll post anything new to DRSC.

Steel Mills are very cool, if we buy this new home in March (with LARGE garage or basement) I plan on installing one on the Tennessee & Western. Cant wait to see some pics.

Hello TN-trainman,

I've already built the BOF in HO,with working lights.Pictures are in the HO part of the forum. Tonight if I get a chance,I'll sneak out to the shed and finish DRSC wharf.Got my camera back,so now I can post pictures again.

Hope you folks have a great turkey day!!!

Started working on the blast furnace. Now I've heard that this kit ,the parts don't line up worth a flip. So is it true ?

I'd like to add a forge shop also, with a scratch built 12,000 ton forge press inside. I found drawings on the Library of congress HABS/HAER web-site of both building & forge press.

So while the glue is drying on the blast furnace, the scratch built forge shop will begin.

I'll take a few pics of what I've done so far.

Scratch built the building in about three hours, according to HABS/HAER this model is compessed by 75'. I am adding another building to it as a furnace re-heater for ingots.

I've done a little research on forging, seems like some of the best forgings came from Shefield England. A company called forgemasters, really like the name.

I like it so much that I entend on naming mine after forgemasters. So its 4000 miles away....like the name.

Also worked on the walthers blast furnace....ticked me off,so worked on the piling wall for the wharf. Wharf done...blast furnace 5 %.

Here are a few pics of the new forge shop,in rough condition. The basic shell of the building measures 2' X 2' ,well compressed. I plan on scratch building the 12,000 ton forge press to go inside.

There are other pics of the DRSC wharf and the EAF melt shop as is one pic of a very crappy cooling tower stand.

Remember...it's for fun!
I like seeing how this all comes together so thanks for the pics! What did you use for those big vents on the roof of the cooling tower?

Ralph,

The very poor cooling tower top cone vents use to be outdoor ground walk-way light fixtures. Yup they went into DRSC heavy shops to be turned into vents. Its amazing the stuff you can dream up if you look around.

Josh,

My forge shop looks to bland.....but after the details she'll look fine. I'm finding the parts in my scrap boxes to scratch build a somewhat decent looking forge press.

With lighting ,press and other stuff ,should look cool once completed...at least I hope so.

Loren,

I'm not happy with any of this stuff yet. Guess after a lot of fine tuning this will all drop into place. My basic oxygen furnace turned out very well and can only hope the rest of the mill turns out the same.

Last night I worked on the walthers blast furnace. What a pain this kit is. Geez, I've been putting kits together for a number of years & this one has to top one of the worst. It started fairly good ,but then went down hill from there.

Also worked on getting the forge press parts together.Still hunting for just the right shapes.Should have something soon.

Lately I've been working on four buildings all at the same time. Of course the blast furnace...what a painful kit to put together. Then my DRSC forge shop almost done with this one. Then on to the walthers first coal floodloader, not the western loader but the first one.Anyhow I'm making this loader fully operational to load my fleet of roundhouse five bay hoppers. This kit is real easy to make operational. Before gluing the whole kit together I cut a slot in the load-out pan.Enough for a sliding piece of copper to use as a cut off.

The built a walthers crane for the forge shop and still working on the bethlehem 12,000 ton forge press.

Then throw in the walthers ore bridge crane kit too.Been pretty busy scratch building and kits.Let alone had much time away from the wifes honey do list.

Should have pics up later on the week.

cant wait to see the progress pics patrick :thumb:.the flood loader sounds very interesting,do you plan on running it like a real flood loader pulling the cars slowly through the stream of coal,or will you stop shortly for each car to fill up  ? i dont know what the lost coal between the rails would do to the wheel sets, not to mention the amount of track cleaning youd need to do wall1 .i ask cause if you can find a way to do this ill want to make my coal mine functional on 3 tracks  and i couldnt find a good way to do it myself .cant wait to here from ya .--josh
