Wow, I won the lottery (again)

Yep, me who has passed up so many opportunities to cash in on the riches from the desolate country of Nigeria, now seem to be able to win a lottery that I never entered into. Seems like these folks want to just send me almost £800,000, for no reason whatsoever. I suppose that they will require my bank account number and Social Security # to verify who I am, and probably a sizable sum in order to pre-pay the taxes and/or some other fees necessary to release these funds.

I usually don't even read these things, but I am entertained by the fact that they think people are so dumb that they would actually think they won something.

Sadly, people do believe these things and freely hand over private information.
Yeah, they try, like the Nigerian scheme, to try to make it believable, but unlike that scheme, they never say who is putting up the 7.5 mil prize money.... Common sense says there's a flaw here in that you won a lottery that didn't cost anyone anything to enter, so some unknown individual or company, or country is fronting the money.... but why????

Guess what!?! My wife and I won the same one as well! Should we all travel together over there to pick up our winnings? :p

Hey, doesn't that E-mail say that was the final anouncement on last tuesday? Besides that, I can't believe that people actualy fall for this kinda thing. People, there's a reason Nintendo created Luigi's Mansion! (for those of you who haven't played it, you won't get the joke)

It's not rocket surgery
I like how they use the big words (like fiduciary ;)), and that an organization as prestigious as the UK National Lottery Online Promo Programme has to give their staff hotmail accounts hamr

I heard of one guy who would dutifully send all these things back, filled out in full, but for the contact information, he used the FBI fraud investigation unit.... ;) :D

I would, but my passport isn't up to date. Besides, I think if I send them enough money and give them my bank account #, they'll just go ahead and send me the money.

I do that too..But I say I'm going through a nasty divorce and don't want my ex knowing I won...Then I give them the snail mail address to a fake FBI agent in the Internet Scam department to the address (which is real) of the local FBI office.

Sgt. Jake got the same address.

You don't know how much of them letters I don't get after that.

Well, they do say there was ten winners, I still might ask them where the 7.5 mil came from. Some generous benefactor no doubt.

I've always said that you have about the same probability of winning the lottery, whether you buy a ticket or not (to 6 decimal places). Now it looks as if you have a better chance if you don't buy a ticket.

Anybody who believes those things has coconuts for brains and is about as hard-headed. I'm usually somewhat forgiving of peoples faults but I have no sympathy for stupidity and no tolerance for dishonesty.

Ah yes, good point. Anyone that wants to get something for nothing, be it the Nigeria scam or winning a lottery they never entered or even getting paid for forwarding emails.... well, they are not honest and honorable folks. Yeah, there are those that aren't too up on the ways of the world and don't recognize these schemes, but it's still the tiny (or large) bit of dishonesty in their hearts to get something for nothing that attracts them to these scams and has them parting ways with some of their cash instead.

Awhile back I found this website on the Nigerian 421 scams:

Nigerian Scam 419 Correspondence

This guy plays with the scammers and tries to see how far he can string them along with absolutely idiotic information. My favorite is the Kolawole correspondence, where in response to the scammer's repeated demands for personal information he sends a fake scan of a driver's license with a picture of Larry from the Three Stooges.

Some of these are pretty funny reads/time wasters.

That's just plain funny to me how these scamers just fall for tricks even more obious then theirs. This one, however, is possibly the most unbelievable at all: Scam o Rama

A documentary the other day featured a guy who replies to these scams.
He delights in teasing the culprits by planning lengthy and detailed meetings and secret rendezvous', and providing fake bank contacts around the world under all kinds of pseudonyms.

The greedy criminals fall for many of his deceptions and apparently go to great lengths to pick up the checks and notes he says he has deposited with Mr. Cheetem at the Bank Of Tookem.
Oh yeah, I remember him. He used to work for the law firm, Dewey, Cheetem and Howe...

Just out of interest, that sequence of numbers hasn't won anything in the last 180 days ( Time limit for claiming a win!)
