Been lurking around here for a few days now, figured it was time to say Hi. It's been atleast 20yrs since I was into model railroading seriously. But over the past few months I have taken my 8yr old son to several railroading events. He has loved trains since he was a toddler and has had a blast. Anyway, I finally pulled my stuff out of storage(mainly only locos survived) but I won't be able to set up a layout for a long time as I am in the military and do not have room. I may set up a display track like I saw in another thread here. Thanks for all your help in advance.

Welcome to The Gauge, Robert! Nice to have you. I'll have to warn you though, after you spend some time viewing all the great stuff that is posted here, you'll end up buying a boxcar here, a piece of flex track there, and soon enough you'll be figuring out a way to build something.

Yes they do. I'll have to remember to get picks sometime when they have the engines out.

Hello and Welcome: You can put lot of stuff on a 8 inch by 6 foot shelf. Even a switch. Add a couple of wires and a power supply and you have a mini layout. Don't forget some method of stopping the rolling stock from rolling off of the ends of the shelf. Have fun.

These pictures show some nice diorama scenes, IMHO. However, the displays are fully functional Free-mo (HO scale) modules. The backdrop is attached to the wall behind the modules; not to the modules. In fact, these two modules were displayed at the 2007 Detroit National Train Show.

There are Free-mo groups in your "neck of the woods", if you are interested. Just trying to share with you some possibilities in modeling

I'd also suggest, if you are able, to build a module and perhaps join a club. Then, when you get the chance you can set it up at one of their meetings. Maybe you can even use your locos on the layout to pull some of their wagons if you don't have any.

How's the Army doing these days? Greetings from an Air Force/Air National Guard guy...like my signature says...flying the Herc to pay for the trains.

You don't need a lot of room, or a lot of money, just some time and maybe a shelf and you can build a really nice display for whatever train or railroad you like. In some ways - that might be a great way to start in the hobby instead of building a big layout right away. You can certainly start small, maybe one or two pieces of flex track on a board and before you know it, you'll have some great ideas about building a little scene that you and your 8 yr old can have fun designing and decorating. Plus, keeping it small will allow it to be moved easily when you get a change of duty station.
