as mentioned by EZ days in a recent post ,not everyone knows the meaning of some of the acronyms used when posting.

perhaps a list of acronyms [ACS,ACN,ACM ??]would be helpful for those like me who can`t always work out what is meant.

OTOH ??? sorry Fred , couldn`t work that one out.

when answering another post is it normal to use the user name or
the name in the signature

is there a preferred method ?

when I replied to nolatron I didn`t look at the signature
until after my reply

I did a Google search and found a couple of acronym dictionaries. One claimed to have over 4,000,000 entries, enough to boggle anyone's mind. I looked at another dictionary and found that one that stumped me, "NOS" had a total of 36 different meanings including the one that was pertinent to that thread.

Now there are a whole list of common acronyms, or short-hand abbreviations that are used in chat rooms and boards, and now used for text-messaging. But there are a whole passel of others that could really mean just about anything in some situations.

When I write one of my newspaper articles, if I use an abbreviation of any kind, I usually define it upon first use, that is common practice in journalism, and just good common sense if you want someone to understand what you're saying. In today's world, I guess it is assumed that the people you are talking to will understand this language, and sometimes it's used to hide what you're saying from others. A good example of that is when your kids will be in a chat room and you'll be watching what they're typing but won't have a clue as to what they're saying. Spy stuff if you will...

Hi TCH,

If a member adds their name under the post I assume they don't mind being called by either name. Hope that helps, Trevor! :)

Ahhh, someone who has a "Manual Of Style".
Way back in the day (early 70's) I worked for the AP at 50 Rock in NYC and had a Style Manual that gave all of the recommended practices for writing a coherent by-line article.

That I picked up from writing technical articles and manuals. Too many people, especially engineers, assume that everyone knows what they are talking about. Just a clue, but never let the engineer that designed the product write the end-user instruction manual for it.wall1 It becomes useless... well, we've all been there, say trying to set up your new VCR or DVR... see, there we go with the acronyms again.

I am finding now that each editor or publication has their own style sheet and wants everyone to use theirs for consistency. It makes sense, but when you write for several different publications, it becomes confusing. I still say that common sense dictates how something should be presented. How easy is it to understand what you write, and the extensive use of acronyms and abbreviations make things more difficult, but it's convenient for those that understand.

Canada, eh?
I suppose that some of these can be useful, although it's not like we have to carve words into stone tablets with hammer and chisel - a few pecks at the keys and the words can be spelled out in seconds.
The one that used to drive me nuts when I was still working was BOF, pronounce "bawf". Anybody who speaks English should know that a single "F" used in this manner is pronounced more like a "V" (think "of", as opposed to "off"). Even I couldn't bother to say it as the words that the letters represented, though, so for me it was Bee - Oh - Eff: otherwise known as Basic Oxygen Furnace. ;):-D

A lot of acronyms can seem pretty arcane outside of the places that they're normally used, as can some work-related terms. My wife was pretty shocked to hear that the steel plant where I worked also employed manuipulators, strippers, and hookers, among others. :-D

I can think of a couple they won't let me post here, and they're probably not the ones you guys know, either.

By the way, acronyms is plural, not possessive.

ACS ACN ACM ? I don't know what they are either. Railway initials?
also common on this forum:
LHS - local hobby shop
ROFL - rolling on floor laughing. also ROFLMAO which I won't translate.
LPB - little plastic blokes or figures.
IIRC - Iffn I remember correctly.

I use either a name from the signature or the usename. Soemtimes it's years before you realize that the username isn't a real name. (I think that when Tyson Rayles went in the hospital, the switchboard was flooded with calls they couldn't put through.) If I'm being really naughty, I may refer to, say, Masonjar as Mr. Jar.

OTOH = On The Other Hand

FWIW = For What it's worth

IMHO = In my humble opinion

LOL = Laugh out loud

Not sure of the other's you mentioned. Any others?

sign1 WOW, I get these messages from the Grand Children frequently, and always thought that LOL stood for "LOTS OF LUCK" at least back in the early 60's when I was a Radio Telegraph Operator it did, yes, and please don't laff, as being a CW operator was a sack job in the Marine Corps back in those days. Anyway now I'll be able to understand what the grandkids are saying, and they won't think Gramps is heading off the deep end when I reply anylonger, Thanx "OM", Old Man and

"KEEP ON TOOTIN"

You see, there are dozens of explanations for each acronym.

To wit: TGIF- Thank God It's Friday...

That doesn't make yours wrong, it's just another way of using it....

A number of years ago, our local daily paper had a friday entertainment supplement called "TGIF" (Thank Goodness It's Friday). Not long after it appeared, one of the local universities published a parody of said supplement, called (in long form) "So Happy It's Thursday".

And yes, they had the initials on the front page in the same style as the real supplement.

Heh.
