Kato SD70M with flared radiators

Hello everyone,

I am new to the site, posting for the first time. I am looking for Kato SD70M's with the flared radiator version. I know Athearn makes the same model but they dont have the operating ditch lights. If anyone knows anyone who wants to part with a unit, trade or knows some where to get one I would really appreciate it.

Thanks,

I just checked the Kato website and they did make the SD70 with the flared radiator. But I also checked my three favorite online sites too and they were all sold out. Try the dreaded google search and see what pops up...I bet there still out there somewhere, but maybe at the smaller mom and pop local stores. I just tried a few more sites and couldn't find it either. Phoenix has some good Nscale stores - but I'm guessing you already tried them.

Thanks for the reply. I do have a couple of very good N Scale suppliers here in Phoenix most notably the The Freight Yard. They do some very good work and have installed all the decoders in my locomotives to date. They are also looking for the same units as they make the UP Heritage units out of them. I am currently having the Rio Grande Heritage unit made and will have the Western Pacific unit made very soon. I found a shop in Austin Texas today, King Hobbies, that has (had) a unit in stock and that was the result of the above mentioned dreaded google search. Again, I appreciate the reply.

Thanks,

Tim Larsen

Hey Tim, welcome to the Gauge. I guess we're neighbors, I live north of Bell just west of the 303. Where are you?

There's a few other guys here that might be more help, TrainNut and Woodone both are familiar with The Freight Yard and An Affair With Trains. They might be able to help you out from that aspect. If not, there are several train shows scheduled for around here. One in Oct up in Adobe Mountain Park, one in November up on N. Central, and I think it's Feb or March when the Great American Train Show comes to Scottsdale. We normally go and meet up there or at one of our houses after the show. Be glad to have you join us one of these times.

Welcome to The Gauge! I see that we have a new N scaler addition.
A Phoenix, one on top of that.:thumb:
I will see if I can't find some information for you.
SD70M with ditch lights---right?

Wow, those heritage units look great on the computer - I was wondering how good they look in person (paint quality most importantly). Let us know how yours turns out. (For the cost - I'd hope they look better in person than the photos do online.) I haven't had enough time when traveling and staying overnight in Scottsdale or Phoenix to visit The Freight Yard - but hope to one day. There are several diesels I'd love to order - but I'd really like to see the work they do first before putting down the money. If I run across an SD70 flared, I'll send you a message. Best of luck tracking one down. Oh just stumbled on this...try texnrails.com...I remember seeing some SD70 units listed online and I just checked and they claim to have some UP units available.

Good luck and keep use posted as how you made out.

Hello everyone,

I am new to the site, posting for the first time.
Welcome! Have fun looking around as there's lots of useful info to be found. By the way, I'm near metro center. You mentioned the Freight Yard... I've been getting more and more disgruntled with them. If you ever order anything through them, stick to your guns and make sure what FINALLY comes in is EXACTLY what you ordered.

NScale Supply is awesome. 4NScale.com is too. BuyNScale.com. and where I get most of my models, EBAY hehe. Everyone should follow Kato's footsteps and add ditch lights to their models.

Boy, that's news coming from you . I have only bought from them once, and don't think I would buy enough to justify buying a shirt or joining their buyers club. To be sure, I can't ever see me ordering anything from any of the local shops. If it's not in stock, it's but a phone call away to someone that does have stock. And the word, "pre-order" does not appear in my dictionary.

You know i feel the same way about the Pre-Order thing. If the LHS does not have what i am looking for i can find it somewhere on the net. And we dont have but one good train shop here that i can find and his prices are way to high. I only get what i need in a hurry from him the rest i get online

Thanks to everyone who has posted a reply, most of the information has been very useful and as of today has produced two more units to add to my collection. Sorry it took a day to respond but I did spent most of today at Del Webb with my wife, she hurt her back picking up our son who is six months old. Got the call while I was at work so I have not had a chance to reply until now.

Ed, I am moving in the next two weeks and we will be North of Bell and just west of the 303 (Bell West Ranch I think), a sudden and unexpected move but the best thing is this house has a third car garage that has added power and is air conditioned, I would say I scored with this one. I had just started building the benchwork for my layout in my current home that would have taken up much of a two car garage so I will have to change the dimensions some what due to the move. Good thing is I had already planned on a two level layout which this new garage will have to fit due to the space. Also, thanks for the invite I would really like to get to a train show soon.

TrainNut: Thanks for the advice as well, I have dealt with them almost exclusivley out here and to date they have not let me down. I have had dealings in the past with other shops that leave something to be desired, I guess we all do at some point. I do agree that usually the best prices and deals are on the net. Most of my stock has come from the net via N-Scale supply, Caboose Hobbies ect. Nice pics of the layouts as well I will try to get some posted as soon as I can start construction of my layout.

Woodone: Thanks for the help as well, I checked with Caboose hobbies and they the SD70MAC in stock which is close but they have some variable diffrences from the SD70M.

Herc Driver: I will let you know how they turn out, the Rio Grande unit should be done pretty soon and the Western Pacific unit is coming after that. Both units will be sound equipped DCC units. I am going to add BLMA fans, lifting hooks and grab irons to the back of the units to detail them as much as possible. I would like for them to be center pieces of my layout which I hope to complete construction by December of this year. They have four units in stock right now, the Rio Grande, Western Pacific, Missouri Pacific and Southern Pacific and all of the units are done very well. I know that the only comparison in N Scale is the Overland Units but they are brass and no one currently has one to compare the two. I am not even sure if Tower 55 has released their HO versions yet. However the decals, paint and details are very clean with little or no visible defects. Mind you I am not a professional scratch builder or detailer but everything is where it should be with regard to the prototype.

Uh, that's Don, not Ed... But, welcome to Bell West Ranch,  we bought here just about four years ago when they were building out and are happy with the area. It is quiet and close to things. We live in the Elliott Homes side, or on the east side of Eastham Parkway. Homes to the west of Eastham were built by Standard Pacific. Both are very nice homes by good builders. Why don't you PM me with your address and phone # when you get here. We'll keep you posted on the train show schedule.

That's debatable!:mrgreen::mrgreen: It took me 45 minutes to get out to your place:eek:.
Think about this, it took me 45 minutes to get to your house. I can't help it if you live out in the sticks:p :p :p :p .We here in Surprise like to consider ourselves as rural folk.:wave:

Hey, it could be worse, I could still be living in Wickenburg.

It is all relevant to where you are- and where your are going.sign1

Oh yea?! I drove 10 hours down there to meet you guys! sign1 And Woodone drove all the way up here and missed me! BTW, Woodone, you are welcome to stop by any day, time spent in the train room cannot count against anything.

10 hrs? You must drive like my dad. He'll be driving along and... SHORTCUT! Thing is, his shortcuts take 2 to 3 times longer than normal.
