YOUR Freelance Road?

Ralph

Remember...it's for fun!
Gary, I got a lot of sheen coming off the decals from my camera flash. You really don't notice the decal film under normal conditions. I may give it another spray of Dulcoat. I've been numbering my box cars in a series from 13400-13500. The NY state map is a recent additon to the scheme. Not all of my cars have it.

Thanks for the kind words.

Wayne, did any of those roads survive into the 1970s?

Does the Grand River Southern have its own boxcars?

Gary, I used to have an extensive collection of '70s equipment, including diesels, passenger cars, and freight cars. I keep an all-time roster, to ensure that I don't duplicate any car numbers. My good friend cnnutbar may be able to provide pictures of a couple of the modern boxcars, but most were sold through a local hobbyshop (and went rather quickly, I'm pleased to say), so I have no way of knowing which ones are still in use or even in existence. My good friend Deano has the EG&E's U-boats. :thumb: The Grand River Southern owns only the diesel shown, although I may letter that Bachmann 2-6-6-2 that I purchased a while back for the same road, and perhaps build a caboose. I decided on the roadname when I drew the original trackplan for my layout. The premise was that the EG&E was a successful bridge line that ran generally north-south along the east bank of the Grand River. Rival Grand Valley (Central), on the west bank, was less successful, and the EG&E eventually bought controlling interest in the line, from then-owner NYC. The plan was to upgrade the Grand Valley as a secondary mainline of the EG&E, and the Grand River Southern was created as a transfer road: its sole purpose was to move freight from the EG&E's southern yard on the east side of the river to the Grand Valley's southern yard on the west side. The original layout called for staging to represent the EG&E's portion, with the GVC's yard actually modelled. Connection would be via an approximately 12' long multiple-span bridge of the modelled river. My current lower staging represents all three parts of the original plan. :( There are no freight cars lettered for the GRS.

Anyway I could procure decals for your Erie Northshore?

Miles, the Erie Northshore (the full name is Grand River & Northern Lake Erie) is jointly-owned by the EG&E and GVC. It provides an interchange with the prototype TH&B at Port Maitland, and was built in the early 1900s to service the flux industry in Port Maitland. Later, it became part of a link in the delivery of coal to a power plant in Mount Forest. The line owns only its own locomotives and cabooses. All rolling stock is provided by the parent companies.
The EG&E has a full complement of all types of freight and passenger cars, and owns all M0W equipment used on any of the lines. The Grand Valley has a medium-size roster of passenger and head-end equipment, in addition to its locomotives and cabooses, and also a handful of wooden boxcars and a few stockcars. The bulk of its freight cars are hoppers for use in the powerplant service. Many of them are re-lettered EG&E cars.
The lettering for the EG&E freight cars is all custom dry transfers from C-D-S, obtained in three separate (and different) orders. The last order included lettering for Grand Valley freight cars. This is basically reporting marks, numbers, and dimensional data in a different font than that used by the EG&E. There is also a herald, which is the same as the EG&E's except for the lettering. All passenger car lettering was done with dry transfer alphabet sets (next time I'll pick shorter roadnames  )
Except for the EG&E Mohawk shown in the first picture, all locos of all other roads were lettered with dry transfer alphabet sets and striping, used as painting "masks": in other words, the lettering is painted-on. With the exception of Deano's U-boats, all of the older (but more modern) EG&E diesels were done with alphabet set decals from Champ.
So, to finally answer both questions, no cars owned by the Grand River Southern or the Erie Northshore, and also no specific lettering available for either.
Once again, sorry to go on at such length, but the history played a part in the development of the roadnames and the operating system. In my original post, I neglected to mention some other free-lanced roadnames that I have, or had, in service. These include Elora Produce Distributors (EPDX):

EPDX was later merged into GVEX, as both, similar to PFE or FGE, provided reefers to their respective parent companies. GILX continues to serve the North American flux industry.

Ralph,

Is the New York state logo colored white inside, or is that the sheen from the decal? From your other photo, I am thinking that the orange color is what actually shows through?

And give me a number that you haven't used yet so I don't double up one of yours. I've already done the "artwork" for some decals, just need that number.

Thank you!:thumb:

So the EG&E did survive into the 70s! Also, I figured that the Grand Valley only owned a loco or two.

Hey CNnutbar.... Got any of those cars that Wayne is speaking of?

On another note, Wayne, I LOVE hearing the details of your layout's history. Number 1, it is interesting, and number 2, it gives me insight into what I need to do to come up with a history for my layout. Everything on and about your layout seems so well-thought-out and plausible that it amazes me. And it gives me something to strive for.

Thank you kind Sir!

Gary, the Grand Valley currently has in service 2 Moguls and 4 Consolidations, plus 4 SW1200RS diesels, with another Consolidation, 2 Ten-Wheelers, and a Pacific awaiting cosmetic rebuilding. Several other steamers were sold-off previously, and there are two more currently stored unserviceable.
The Erie Northshore's roster, all Alco/MLW, includes 4 Mikados, 4 RS-11s, and an S-4.
The EG&E locos still in my possession include the Mohawk pictured earlier, a Niagara, an FPA/FPB-4 combo, four freight FAs, an E9A, E7B, and the Pacific pictured below, which is the one slated to be redone as a Grand Valley loco.

Here's what the EG&E's paint scheme looked like for most of their diesels, both FAs, F-units, and hood units. The paint is PollyS, applied with a brush. The colours are no longer made.

Hey CNnutbar.... Got any of those cars that Wayne is speaking of?

I was going to "lift" some photos out of his Gallery Album, but the ones that I had in mind were in the old Gallery, and didn't make the trip to the new Gauge. I'll send him an e-mail requesting photos for this thread. ;)

What an OUTSTANDING Idea. Rolling stock from other peoples roads running on your layout. Anyone here feel up to compiling a list of members freelanced road names, rolling stock inventories and numbers, not to mention industry held cars? (hmmm, now this is looking like work). ;)

But it is a nifty idea.

Gary,

The NY map is just a black outline and the orange shows through. It bugs me that the flash bounced off of it that way in the pic! Like I said, maybe more dulcoat! :) I haven't numbered any cars from 13400-13410 so be my guest to select a number in that range if you'd like. This is so cool!

I hope that no one who is going to participate in this will be offended if I don't ask to model an example of your railroad's rolling stock. Until I can bring myself to part with 100 - 150 cars (mostly prototype roadnames) that are too modern for my chosen era, plus a number of diesels, I don't really have room for more.

I haven't had the time to start making decals for these yet, but here is the plans for 60' boxcars for my home road, "Pacific Northern".

Here is an example of the PN locomotive scheme.

I have plans drawn up for PN Coil Steel cars, Gondolas and Centerbeam flat cars, but they are just reporting marks only so far, no logos on them. I also have intermodal stuff, but it's kind of outlandish for a model railroad.

Ralph, I got anxious this morning and printed out the decals. You had given a pretty large range of numbers, so I played the odds that a number I picked would not be one you picked. I found an outline map of New York off of the internet, and then matched your fonts.

I haven't put the decals on the car yet, so that is no big deal. The number I chose is 13436. Is that one vacant and acceptable? If so, I just need to get a car painted up. But I can change the number if needed. Let me know.

I don't have my camera this weekend so I can't do any photos... unless I can figure out how to use my wife's camera.

No problem with me. Each of us has his own thoughts of what rollingstock we want on our layouts, and that is perfectly acceptable. Also, I don't have the resources to do everyone's freelance name, so I will just pick the ones I want to do. I also hope no one gets offended if I don't choose your roadname. And, there may be those amongst us who don't want others to use the road. So, no hard feelings from anyone I hope.

Jbaako, historically, was your Dad's road around in the 1970's? And if so, could you post another side view photo, and give me a raod number I could use?
Yesum, its history makes it 5 years old in 1970. It was formed in 1965 trying to capitalize on the declining railroad operations of the Soo Line, Milwaukee Road & Copper Range Railroads. In the 70's the cars would not have looked as clean, that car is modeled as of 1990 shortly after a repaint. In the 70's you'd find them in patched Soo, MILW, CN&W, and others. Make it look like it was a Soo car, fade it a tad, then patch over all the Soo lettering and numbering. Over the right, put the letters QHS, and the left, Q&HS 1104. Lemme know what kind of car you pick, I'll link it from his roster.

Thanks for the info and the suggestions! You're on! I will do a car just as you say.... just give me awhile. I'll probably pick up a SOO car and then sand the lettering, fade the car, rust it up, then patch the spots for the Q&HS lettering.
