For everyone's referenceOne thing I'd also like to throw out on the challenges is that they maybe be run not as contests. I know that there's something to be said for having a winner at the end of the challenge. On the other hand, a non-competitive challenge (where the "challenge" is the deadline and whatever rules are set up) might draw out more participants with a wider variety of skills. This, of course, is coming from the guy who pulled up second in the scratchbuild challenge....
This would be similar to the old Gauge parties (could those be resurrected?) but different in the sense that everyone is working on a project with similar basic parameters.

The "Challenges" are not produced to Compete against other members.. The idea is to challenge yourself to build something you wouldn't normally build without us "prodding" you
The Challenge I have undertaken (Railroad Spiker) I don't need for the layout and I would never have wasted the time building it....
But - since the "annual fall challenge " has come around, I Will build it... I Will take the time... And I'll do the best I can with the junque I have lying around.
The idea is to hone, my skills, to keep the procedures fresh in my mind - a review of sorts...
I have little time or energy nowadays to "make time" to improve the layout, although now is the time I start tweaking and adjusting for the holiday visits from friends and family
But the Challenges... make me think of "Something" to do -- to actually create something to help me not forget a modeling technique, or a procedure..
Mostly so when someone asks a question - I'll remember the answer sign1sign1So I look at the challenges as a "personal thing" seeing if in fact, I "can" actually put my models where my mouth is
I've entered photo contests, Challenges, parties and Fantasy Leagues. I have won one fantasy league, a few years ago - but have not won any other contests.... I'm only in it for the fun and the (Pardon the pun) Challenge.....
You only get out of something what you put in to it..

No problem N Gauger, the layout size could be adapted to the modeled scale. I'm not familiar with G scale I only know it's the one used for garden railways. In that case instead of being named a shoebox layout, it might be named " A stove or a refrigerator box layout ".

Yes, nice idea. By the way that's the way the popular "inglenook sidings" switching layout is based upon. Scale doesn't matter What is important is how many engine and cars each siding can hold.
