Recent Scratch Model

Here's a scratch model I completed over the spring. It's after the fashion of FSM's Seafood Emporium but slightly reduced in extent so as to fit into a space I have for it on the layout. The spot isn't quite ready for it yet, so I photographed the building out-of-doors one sunny day a week ago.

I'm on dial-up tonight, and as the first photo was loading slowly from top to bottom, I was thinking to myself: "This is a joke, CNJ is trying to pass off a real structure as something he modeled! Not until the photo got down to the people did I believe it was a model! And even then, the thought that the figures were photo-shopped onto a pic of a real building went through my mind. That is one fantastic piece of modeling for sure!

The shingles and the railing and clock up top look REAL.

That is absolutely wonderful modeling. My hat's off to ya' - that is really well done. I really like those boards that are coming off here and there...and the subtle weathering. Really - really great work.

I am in absolute awe of that modelling and the skills of the person who did it, I couldn't even dream of modelling something that great. Wish I could find a great video of someone scratchbuilding a model. I have trouble with the Walthers modular system.

a really fine modeling job. Models scratchbuilt from wood and built after a wood original ist best what you can do it. I like such excellent model building.

Thanks for all the kind comments, guys. I find these structures fun to build (guess I've always been kinda a frustrated architect at heart) and they do look nice on the layout eventually.

Fun story associated with one of my other scratch efforts. I had a proxy entered a nicely staged B&W photo of a barge-mounted piledriver model in July's NMRA's Detroit national convention' photo contest...as a model photo. Judges looked at it and placed it with the prototype photos. It won second place! Everybody thought it was real. All had a good laugh, plus some red faces, when after the contest ended they re-checked the entry forms.

Addressing a couple of questions, I build from scaling model/ad photos but sometimes also adjust the dimension to what seems pleasing to my eye. And while I don't have any running commentary on construction methods for this particular building, I do have a couple of basic in-progress shots that might be mildly instructive as to how it went together.
