Making removable coal loads

Hi Guys, im trying to find out how to make removable coal loads. Did a google search but couldnt find anything on the method I want to use.

I want to make them with the water/glue method using the cardboard base and wax paper. You cast the load inside the car and then you remove it when it is dry and take the wax paper off.

Can anyone can give me a link to somewhere it explains how to do this?

I member a web site that I went to awhile back that did an EXELLENT job explaining how to make removable loads using this method and now im kicking myself wall1 wall1 wall1 wall1 cause I didnt save the link sign1

When you're on the gauge, you might also search for "removable eoads"; someone told us how to make them as well.

I haven't made coal loads but gravel is like coal,sorta.
I hacked a coal{oops ,gravel}shaped load out of styrofoam painted it with white glue and sprinkled on the gravel.This ,I find doesn't make a big change in the weight of the car.

I went ahead and made 2 loads last night after I logged off when I posted this. I did them how I thought I membered the guy doing them on the web site I saw.

I first cut a piece of cardboard to fit inside the hopper, then layed a piece of wax paper inside the car under the cardboard cutout, then mixed 1:1 water and glue and spread a layer ontop of the cardboard and sprinkled "coal" (its actually ground up asphalt from when they re-did the streets around my house) ontop, then spread some more glue and added another layer of the coal. Let if dry overnite and then pealed the wax paper off and trimmed the coal load, set in place and here it is.

Josh, I think you made it too flat on top of the load. I don't know if coal is loaded differently than the coke trains we see going to the harbor around here, but all of the coke loads I've seen have the coal pile in a neat "roof" shape down the center of the car.

Ill have to try and make them not so flat and have more peaks in them.

You might try cutting a piece of foam to the shape of a coal load, dip it in glue, and then dip it in a box of your crushed asphalt/coal. Make the foam block to just fit into the coal hopper. You don't need to put glue or coal on the sides of the block, just cover the top of the foam block so that all you see is the coal when you put it in the car. Maybe even spray the foam block flat black before adding the coal so no white shows through.

One of our club members made some loads for me out of the plastic packing that computer boards used to come in -- the egg-crate type. A very mild egg-crate gives a humped shape with a few piles along the way. They are often just the right width for HO.

Yeah, it still makes me laugh when I read it... glad I'm not the only one. I especially like those early posts by ezdays asking what all this jargon was - plus I think he's the one that coined "groindola" - brilliant!!

Just think - now he's all growed up and an administrator an' everythin'... sign1
