Playing around in Atlas Freeware

hey Guys, I was bored so I decided to do a layout in Atlas Freeware

Im liking it so far, I think I will use this one as one of the many plans I have done for a full room layout as many of you might remember. I keep doing new plans, when I finally start my full room layout, Ill have a bunch of plans to choose from   since I have done about 8 different plans so far sign1

here is my latest plan:

This one shows the measurments of the benchwork
(The edges of the benchwork are kinda hard to see, but you can better see it in the next pic)

Shows the Mainline, the benchwork are the grey lines

Here is the Layout started

So far I have the following Buildings:
  1. The Light Green is a Refinery using the following Walthers Cornerstone Buildings: North Island Refinery (x1), Tank Car Loading Platform (x9), Wide Oil Storage Tank, 575,000 Gallon (x3), ]Tank Truck Loading Rack (x1)
  2. The Orange is the Lumber Company using the following Walthers Cornerstone Buildings: Mountain Lumber Company Sawmill (x1), Sawmill Outbuildings (x1)
  3. The Blue is the Grain Distributor using the following Walthers Cornerstone Buildings: ADM Grain Elevator (x1), Red Wing Flour Mill (x2), Refinery Piping Kit (x1)
  4. The Light Blue is the Walthers Medusa Cement Company (x1)

I'm liking that refinery. I may steal that corner of your layout plan for my addition... build in a 4 track Northeast corridor mainline seperately and its sold.

sign1 Now that you point that out......

That didnt even phase me when I was making the benchwork but now I realize thats a lotta reaching

Crap lol

Well despite 51" sounding like a HUGE reach, I just measured my longest reach on my layout in my room right now (which is an L-Shaped layout) and it is 54" and I can just barly reach into it (not all the way but almost) so I think it will be "okay" for this plan

Did a lil more work on the plan today, added the HUGE GIGANTIC Cement Complex in  sign1

Here it is (Green boxes) using the following Walthers Cornerstone Buildings:

Valley Cement Complex (x1), Medusa Cement (x1), Blue Star Ready Mix (x1), Bulk Transfer Conveyor (x1),

10x10FullRoomLayoutCementComplex.jpg

I moved the Medusa Cement Building into this complex to create a larger facility. That way, it will create the center point of the layout. Cement will be both shipped by rail and truck here. Also the bulk transfer conveyor allows for open hopper cars to dump gravel for use in the cement process. This will be a massive cement complex and everything will be connected by pipelines and conveyors, should be a real eye catcher and also be a sweet spot to snap some pics  :thumb:

Been a couple days now, havnt really been home all that much so not that much modeling has gotten done, I did work some more on the plan tho

I finished the top level and added in the helix down to the lower level and started the bottom level.

Here is the plan as it has progressed throughout today

I added in a custom made warehouse using the module walls made by Nu-Line Structures. Building will have rail service on both sides of the building and truck docks on the front. I also added a space to park some of my trailers in the yard. Walthers is making a new building called "Washington Salvage Yard" and I thought it would go well with my layout since it is all heavy industrial type stuff so I added that in the small remaining space there was left.

Here is the Helix that goes down to the lower level. Helix is marked in red. Track begins its decent right at the switch point.

10x10FullRoomLayoutHelix.jpg

Here it is without all the surrounding track and buildings on the Top Level

10x10FullRoomLayoutHelix2.jpg

And here is the planned mainline comeing off the helix. Continues down and also branches off and goes to the other side of the layout.

I decided to model the Micro Engineering Viaduct Bridge where the mainline comes off the helix and branches off to go back under part of the helix back to the other side of the bottom level.
  • The red track is the helix going up to the top level
  • The Grey track is the mainline coming off the helix and at normal layout height (not raised or lowered)
  • The Blue Green track is the mainline that branches off and goes under the helix. This track is lowered down to clear the helix and also crosses a HUGE valley that will have a river/creek running through it.
  • The Orange track is the Micro Engineering Viaduct Bridge crossing the valley. Valley will be about 10 3/4" deep to match the height of the bridge.

Added the New River Minning Company and the Coal Flood Loader in on the bottom.

It all starts in the bottom right corner with the mountain that is being mined. Coal travels along the conveyor at the bottom from the mountain to the New River Minning Company. Then loaded into hopper cars and trucks at New River and also Coalporters by the Coal Flood Loader.

That doesn't look possible. The viaduct crosses over the helix itself, not just the track coming out. There's no vertical room for any valley at all.

EDIT: I got my elevations mixed up. Still, there's a problem. The helix is directly above (obviously only a few inches above) visible sceniced track. Visually, I can't see how that's going to work.

I see your point, thanks for pointing it out. I think im going to take that bridge/valley idea out now and just have a run thru track. The track will still be lowered to clear the helix but just wont have the bridge and valley. I dont want to be able to see the helix in the pics that I take of/on the bridge lol I also need to put up a removable scenic divider to conceal the helix from full view.

It always helps when I get good feedback like this, thanks again Triplex

Hey Trucklover,

That's looking good!, I wouldn't worry 'bout reach though, 'cause you could always make an access hatch- on a single decker layout anyway.

Anyways, like your plans

Thanks Madhatter, and im not to worried about the reaches lol

I added the removable scenic dividers in, ill prolly just make these outta some thin plywood and add some backdrops on them.

I needed a big space for the next one. Since I love the construction industry I had to have a Asphalt plant. I added 2 of the Walthers Black Gold Asphalt Plants in. I also added a tank car siding in next to the plant. Now I will have a HUGE Concrete plant (upper level) and a HUGE Asphalt plant (lower level)

The last Building I will be adding is the Walthers Open-Air Transload Building which is served by 3 tracks.

Im also going to make a change by the Gravel Plant, Im going to make the quarry span the whole width of the layout in that section and have the 4 tracks right there be bridges.
