Railings on the Fitz

I built the JSC Fitz at 1/400. It did not come with printed rails and I did not add any. From the picture you can see that even with printed two sides railings it would have probably looked better.

Looks good to me - rails or no. I can only hope that mine will turn out as nice as yours. How did you do the water?

It would be neat to see some photos of your Ambrose too. I've just gotten set up to start that one as my first ship model.

Cheers --- Larry

Thanks for all the nice remarks guys.

The water is regular old wall plaster. Then painted accordingly and finally with several coats of acrylic gloss.

That little model is great. Good fit to everything. I would like to do that one again (my buddy liked it so much that he claimed it ...actually I made the the Fitz for him too).

In Memorium

Thirty-one years ago tonight, 29 brave men lost their lives. My Edmund Fitzgerald project is dedicated to their memory, and that of all mariners lost on the Lakes.

Nicely done, Scott...what a wonderful tribute to those who perished that fateful night. Thank you for reminding us of the date and of their loss, as well as of the too many others who met a similar fate plying those deceptively dangerous waters.

We're celebrating Veteran's Day today in the U.S. and I like to remember not only the Veterans of the Armed Services but also those of the Merchant Marine who served bravely during our various conflicts, many paying the ultimate price for their service. Some might find it interesting that more Merchant Mariners lost their lives in WWII than in any of the armed services, something that struck me when I heard that fact.

My skill level, or yours?

A couple of weeks ago, I was working on an improved, more detailed version of the hatch crane for the Fitz model. I wasn't happy with the simple, original one, since I have many good detail shots of it. My problem is, how far do I go with the detail? I tried to build what I'd designed, but it came out looking like (censored). I'm sure most of you could do OK with it, but my own skills aren't quite up to cutting out gaps and dealing with the small parts. The part at the bottom of the image is the original. see why I wasn't happy with it? So the actual question here is, do I design this so I can build it, or the way I want it and hope others will be able to? Let me know what you think.

I'm thinking that since it doesn't take up all that much space, why not include both versions and let the builder decide which way they want to go.

By the way, it looks really good!

Well, duhh! You know, sometimes I have to be smacked in the face before I think of the obvious:eek:ops:. I should have thought of that myself!

Thanks, Russell, glad you like it.

Pls get the colors right. JSC got the cabin colors wrong. They are not cream, they are a coffee with cream color. Looks impressive, will you make it available?

Most of the color pictures I have, both real and models, show the color as being nearly white. Can you point me to a site that shows the Columbia colors clearly?

Glad you like the model so far. It will be available eventually, if I can ever finish it. Let me ask your opinion, At this scale, do you think the model should include the deck camber? The white model seen earlier in the thread has "flat" decks. One of the things I've been working to add to the latest version is cambered decks.

I will send you some jpegs if you email me at royaloakmin@comcast.net. I will try to post here if I can figure it out. Columbia used the coffee & cream color from the 1930s until they sold the ships last year. The Boatnerd.com sit also has good pictures where you can see the color. I visted the Fitz in 1975 in Lorain and can personally vouch for the color. Once you have the Fitz done, you just need to recolor it, and you will have her exact sister, the Arthur B. Homer. This is a great thing that you are doing as many have been hoping to see some freighters done.
