Whats in a Name

You started a very good thread indeed, Jimmy, glad you did!

Well, I gues I should tell my story... I live in the old stomping grounds of the old Monon Rail Road, the Hoosier Line! (If you're on dial up you might try This Hoosier Line Link which should open twice as fast). I'm from Rensselaer, Indiana, which is very near Monon Indiana, where the Monon's two mainlines cross. Well, I named myself jon-monon, in anticipation of becoming a Monon freak. I even set up the Jon's Unofficial Monon Rail Site
~ and other Little Goodies ~
website in said anticipation. I even went out and bought some Monon stickers. BTW: Shamus, you will get a sticker in the mail soon, and you should stick it in the window of your car, then people from all over the world will ask you, "What the hell is a Hoosier?" then you can hand them a copy of hte article I linked. Anyway, all this effort to become a Monon freak, and thus a hoosier freak, and NOTHING! I'm still just me! I'm beginning to think I'm not really from here. Maybe I should take up shooting hoops. Maybe I was adopted. Or planted by aliens. Maybe I was born in Iowa. Or at least conceived there. That's where my parents come from, scrathing head, a little math, yep, summer 1963, they musta been on one of their long teacher vacations visiting granny and bang, heeeeeers Johnny!

My user name, Cpt Carter, is a character name taken from one of my favourite childhood shows called 'StarFleet'. I loved the show and liked the char so its a name that i have used for various things on the Internet.

Good topic Jimmy. i could have used an old nickname back in university, Switch. But it wasn't related for my model railroading.
i picked Railery because of 'rail' in railroad. :)

Well, nice thread. :)

The city where I lives -Irun- is just in the border ("frontera", in spanish) with France. It and its sister french city -Hendaye- are 20 kilometers apart from the province capital city -San Sebastian-.

Almost a century ago, it was built an metric RR with electric traction, between Hendaye and San Sebastian. The 20% of it are tunnels, so it was soon nicknamed as "Topo" ("mole"). Today, it is one of the few metric RR in Spain still operating (and with good profit). When child, I loved to go to St. Sebastian in it (it bumped a lot, and it was funny!), so I took my nick from here.

This is the "Topo" circa 1955. The locos and the rolling stock have been improved some since then... ;)

Je, Je, Je...

Well, YOU have asked for it... :D
and Interurben have kindly offered to proof-read it, so I will put in the "Real Thing" section an extended history of the little "Topo", with more old pictures (mostly around the 50's).

Multiple personalities....

I've had many nick names over the years.

Not all of them flattering...

Lizard (Liz for short)
Lobotomy (Lobo for short)(From the Ramones song "Teenage Lobotomy")
Mr. Blister ('cause I can get under people's skin.)
Billy-bum (Middle name is William)

Several others that I can't/won't repeat....

When I worked at a residential summer camp for inter-city kids, I got the name Rat-Bag. Coming from a taciturn co-worker, this was a compliment.

The name stuck, and I use it for my e-mail addy...

When I tried to use Rat-Bag online it was already taken.

I needed a username in a hurry, and I wanted something railroad related, so I picked Tin Goat since it was the project that I was working on at the time.

Oh, you can call me Tin, or you can call me Goat, or you can call me Mister, or you can call me Sn, or you can call me......

Anyhoo...My name comes from my weekend job (Hobby, more like) with the Armed Forces Reserve. We're a light armoured unit with cavalry roots, the "South Alberta Light Horse". For a while, we had a ceremonial mounted troop, and I was a member. We did formation riding, jumping, lance drills, charges, etc. Hence, I do actually qualify as a Lighthorseman.

...At least the horses didn't break down all the time...:)

My civvy job does not even rate a mention.:p

Live at 9,000 feet in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, three miles of steep, unimproved dirt road from the turn-off to the house, four-wheel drive a must, heat with wood which I cut, split and stack five cords of each summer and fall, do all our own repairs and building projects - hence MountainMan.

But what's in a name? Everything. Would you rather have a semi-charred chunk of bovine butt muscle...or a steak, medium rare?

Shakespeare didn't have a clue.
