Boeing Model 307 Stratoliner

While reading one of my old pl****c model magazines, I came across an article on converting a 1/144 B-17 to it's airliner/transport cousin, the Boeing 307 Stratoliner. Hmm, I thought, I can do that with FG's B-17! Well, it hasn't been quite that simple, but the FG model has been a useful reference. Here's a pic of the first build test, the fuselage, tail plane and a pair of FG B-17 wings I'm using for reference.

I though I could use the tailplanes from the B-17, but you can see they don't match very well. (More like the ones on a B-17C).

Of course, I had to see how big this beast will be, so I set the B-17 wings next to the fuselage to make a sort of mockup.

Looks good (to me, anyway!) so far. Can't wait 'til I can get a proper set of wings on her.

Very nice Scott. If the empennage section/parts are similar to the -17C, FG does have a Model 299 available. Might help ya out.

Interesting. You gonna tell Chip about this when you get it done? I was there for the 307 (re-) rollout a few years ago...

Thanks, Texman.

Diamondback, it'll definitely be available to Chip, if he wants it. I better make sure I do a good job on it, since you've seen the real thing:grin:.

Excellent work, sdk2knbk.

I have looked at working up one of those for a long time...never thought of using the FG B-17 as a base.

Just to let you know, Chip would be interested in the in the 307. We even discussed it when we hit the Smithsonian and saw their 307 during the cardmodel convention.

Being the B-17 fanatic that I am, the Boeing 307 is an airplane I was planning to do too. Unfortunately, any more, I barely have time to breath let alone do models. I did do the paint scheme for Chip's Me 321/323 Gigant and I'd like to do a beta build of murphaa's very nice B-10. As far as the 307 is concerned, it is closer to the "shark fin" B-17s than it is to the B-17G (Chip's model) as far as wings, engines and horizontal tail surfaces are concerned. From your photos though you got the tail surfaces right. I did go back into my 299 model and made some corrections as well as doing a couple of versions of the Y1B-17 and the B-17A. For the Y1B-17 I drew the Wright Cyclone engines and designed a simple but fairly accurate rendition of the standard B-17 landing gear. Chip was not interested in any of these but if you would like the B&W versions with the relevant parts I'd be happy to e-mail them to you. Drop me a private message with your e-mail address. I also have some detailed plan drawings. Time permitting I could scan them for you. I was planning to do a TWA, Pan Am and the military C-75 versions. What are your plans? I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

The design-build continues. Still needs upper wing fairings, landing gear, prop spinners, and small details. Once the actual parts are done, I can start on the missing surface detail (cockpit windows, panel lines, etc.)

Since I couldn't use the FG B-17 wings I built, I decided to build the rest of the plane. As practice for the 307 detailing, I modified the B-17 parts and "de-militarised" it (removed all of the turrets and gun locations.) I plan on making a couple of tanks and spray bars to mount under the wings to make the model resemble a pesticide spraying aircraft I once saw.

Thanks, Felix! Those shots will help a lot! It's nice to see some different angles for a change. A good overhead and right side view has been hard to come by.
