How about we, on the forum, all pitch in $5.00 and buy it. Then we could have a round robin with them and pass them around to each others house... maybe alphabetical... or by longest straw.:thumb:

What do you guys think?

Who pays the shipping? :D

What do you guys think?

1. Who do we give the $5 to?
2. What are we gonna do with 'em if we get them?
3. How are we gonna MOVE them if the railroad won't let them pass?

Here's another idea:

We all send $5 or more to Cannonball, who then donates ALL of the colected money to the museum they were at, so that way we can help save them yet not worry about extra fares!

...Just putting alternatives out there:rolleyes:

Considering what we would do to help preserve these historic loco's, that doesn't seem to much of a hassle (since most of us can't make it 'cause we don't live close enough)sign1

Actually, I thought about setting up some sort of donation thing for them but I didn't know how many people would actually be trusting enough to send money. I know I'm an honest guy but I don't know how many of you know that yet. ;)

A Save The Rockets Fund or something.

A Save The Rockets Fund or something...

...at a local train show maybe? Try posting this info on realatively cheap (compared to today's prices) engines on other model railroading forums (maybe one that has nothing but rock island moddelers for members?) and we just maybe able to save these locos.

They're both E-units. 652 is an E8 or E9. 630 is an E6, an earlier model. RI was the last road to operate E6s; one ran into the late 70s.

CRIP 630 is a E6A and CRIP 652 is a E8A.

Although both E's have "The Rocket" logo on them, the RI "Rockets" were specific trains, which could and were pulled by various locos (LWT12a, TAs, DL107s, FP7s, BL2s, E6, 7, and 8s, etc). Some of the Rocket trains were the Texas, Peoria, Rocky Mountain, Des Moines/Corn Belt/Quad Cities (name changed as the route got shorter!), and the Golden State (a Rocket in reality, if not in name).

Charging at full tilt.
Nice Idea, but those locos would not fit on our 3'6'' gauge tracks- and then we have to get it on a ship to South Africa, I like the second idea of donating a few bucks then seeing them preserved though- lol.

Dangit.... Now you guys have me seriously conisdering doing this. If I could find some way to raise the $100,000 to acutally buy the locos, then Midland Railroad could put whatever money they bid against actual repairs and restoration.

Do y'all think this would really be doable?

I'm not sure about the $100,000, but if the museum were to set up a website with a PayPal account and sell some sort of certificate with the loco's on it, I bet they could raise some serious capital. I'd contribute $25 or so. I definitely think the loco's need to be preserved in their current livery. I've run into railroad enthusiasts on other websites and would be willing to post a thread with a link on those sites. PM me if I can help.

A horde of dedicated railfans/modelers VS. $100,000

Who do you think will win? (I think we should all know:rolleyes:sign1)

I may look into getting a bank account set up to attach to a PayPal account or something. Even if we couldn't get the $100,000, it might still raise a nice bit of change for the railraod to refurbish some of their current equipment.

A posting from the RITS (Rock Island Technical Society) list:

The listing of the units came as a bit of a surprise, so we did not establish a budget for them. If terms can be worked out with the owners, Iowa Northern has an interest in purchasing these units through our sister company, Hawkeye Express, LLC and working toward restoring them to operating condition.

This would be great news for RI fans and Iowans, if it can be done!
