ok. new plan for a train room. im going to get a portable shed (the kind on skids). at least a 10 x 12. going to try for a maybe a 12 x 15 tho. first im going to put tile down on the floor. then i will insulate the walls and ceiling. then i will get some cheap (but looks good ) paneling on the walls. then i will put up a 24" shelf all around the walls, with a lift up or out part in front of the doorway. the shelf will be kinda high but not too high. this will be where i put my O scale layout. and up at the top i will have another shelf just wide enough to run 1 o scale train up there, and lots of display shelves to display my o scale collection. now under the 24" o scale shelf will be my N scale modular layout. the modulars are 24" wide as well. there will be 2 or 3 feet between the N and O layouts.. i will have a 13" tv/dvd on the wall in one corner, a radio, and some way to heat it in the winter. the N scale layout will be made so i can take them out easy to go to train shows if i want.

if i do this with this kind of building, if and when i move i can just call in a rollback truck and take my train room with me.

what do you all think?

Get a good sturdy one that doesn't twist when moved. Don't forget the electrical and heating before you put in all of that insulation and paneling. Also do you have electrical capacity in your house for the above mentioned power?

oh i got lots of power in the house, just redid the house. i figure with the size im looking at and it being insulated i space heater will work,

i have a 10x12 shed here now, that i moved once already. i could use it i cleaned it out got rid of a lot of junk. the little bit that im keeping i can put in the garage. but still may get a 2nd shed.

ok, im making a change.... i want a yard on the o scale layout so i dont have to spend time setting trains up on the track, im thinking the yard will be under the main layout and will go up a incline through a hole in the middle of the shelf of the main layout.

do you think its possible?

I noticed you mentioned heat for the winter but what about cooling for the summer? Have you ever been in one of those sheds in July? They get hot! You're an Iowa boy. You know how humid and muggy it can get up there. You're definitely going to need an AC unit if you want to spend any time with your trains in the summer.

If you have the yard space, and a significant other that doesn't mind you disappearing to the shed all the time, I say go for it. But I would definately echo Cannonball's comment about A/C.

in the summer im riding the motorcycle most of the time. and when its real real hot i can sit inside the house and work on the n scale modulars, then when its all done take it out to the shed. i got 3 or for ac window uints sitting around to.

i just loaded a truck load of junk to take to the dump out of my shed. maybe in a couple of weeks i can start the shelving.

Ozzy: a yard under the layout is possible; I did one in HO and a friend found a 16' board and retro-fitted one to his layout.
Problems are fiddling under there (if you change trains around while they're in the yard) and the incline to go down -- you may have to make a couple of turns around the shed.

ok new idea! im thinking of keeping the N scale layout in the house where it is now. and doing 2 levels of O scale. then i can have a yard on one of the main layouts.

but then id still want to be able to run trains from one level to the other. so im right back where i started.... but now the 2 levels would be at least 2 feet apart..... i got to quit adding things....GRRRR...lol

hmmm,,,, if i used 0-27 curves i cold do a helix , and it would only be 27"x27" wide i was not really wanting to use any 027 tho, i wanted 036 for the smallest.

Somewhere, a while back, I remember coming across a link in a thread of a guy who had a train buiding out back of his house with a very nice, sizable layout inside. He then sold his house and needed to move and decided to hire house movers to come in and move his train building down the road a few miles to his new place of residence. Anybody else remember that?

I did one on my present layout , I have a 2.5 % grade for the trains to get down to it:wave:

The grades would be impossible. With a helix, grade constraints often require that you use a larger radius than your minimum. Sharp curve helices are generally considered impractical, though they have been done. By "sharp", I mean 36"+ radius in O - O72 curves.
