What Think Ye?

A friend of mine is giving up being a logger and wants to move into the 60s.
His druthers is he wants a unique roster..My thoughts went to the GB&W(Green Bay & Western) all Alco roster and suggested using RS2s,RS3,RS11s,RS27s,RS32s and maybe C424s or C425s.As yard switchers I suggested S2s or S4s or perhaps a RS1.

I also suggest he may want to consider using FM H16-44s.

Since he hasn't made any decisions I thought I would get some forum input for his consideration.

Brakie,

Could you define "unique"? (not like unique rabbits... to catch 'em unique up on 'em)... :p

Trona was certainly unique with its big Baldwin centre-cabs... EJ&E too.

Or is he looking for an eclectic mix of motive power? Different models from different builders? CNJ and New Haven both had mixed up rosters, as did the NYC (I beleive their motive power philosophy was "A little bit of each..." :) ).

He wants a non standard locomotive roster like a mixture of EMDs,Alcos,GEs etc.He wants a non EMD roster since everybody has EMDs and from one locomotive builder..

He could even move into the 80's, 90's, or today and model the Arkansas & Missouri all Alco fleet with C420s for mainline power and T-1s for switching duties.

How about the White Pass and Yukon? It's a bridge between his narrow gauge and modern day... and they had some pretty cool locos... GE Shovelnoses, Alco snoots and widecabs:

The WP&YR also has some old distinctive rolling stock. I poked around their yard in Skagway last summer and took a lot of prototype photos, if anyone is interested. I also took the train up to the Yukon border -- quite a fun trip!

Larry, though i am a fan of GBW;-), another road that had a WIDE variety of engines made by different builders was the CNW:thumb:, they were BIG on Alco's & FM's, and had GE's, and Baldwins, not to mention the EMD's. just a thought. -Deano

As a follow up he decided to go with RS3,RS11s and RS32s as road power and S4s as yard power.

Thanks to all that replied.

He ought to take a look at the New Haven. Alco, EMD, Fairbanks-Morse, GE, Westinghouse, Lima and Baldwin. In both steam and diesel. Now, that's diversity!

mmmmmmmm................Alco diesels....................

Has he looked at, say, the possibility of adding C420s when they come out? Since it sounds like he's getting all his engines from Atlas (they make all the diesels you mentioned), that would be a logical purchase as well.

Still, can't beat an all-Alco roster.......:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

Yes,I have mention the C420s and oddly he doesn't like the looks..I also mention the P2K RS27 as well and he likes the way it looks.
