What has everyone done this weekend?

I have been doing road crossings (I hate it). I make the paper templets then transfer that to thin styrene then glue down and or stick down with butal rubber (some old AMI roadbed) and then paint.

I am spending my weekend in a motel with my wife as I am working in Lancaster, PA.
We are in the process of moving from Wisconsin to Nebraska and had to send our son to Wisconsin this weekend to finish moving our furniture out and that includes the dis-assembling of my layout and putting all in storage until we find a new home in Nebraska that fits our requirements.

Friday, I worked on a manufacturing building. Yesterday, I worked a little more on the same building, and then spent a lot of time working on the backyard patio with my wife. Today, I painted a bit of track and the ties to see how it would look, then we went to the home deopt for more patio supplies, and right now I am weathering some gondolas. After while, I'll probably get back to painting track.

As you can see, I am doing a balancing act between honey-do's and my hobby.

Trainwise, I've been watching my BN go around and around on my little train set loop. Played with RTS some more and trying to come wup with a 3x6 layout I like and can afford to build. Watched my train go around in circles some more. Posted on the Gauge. Watched my train go around and around in circles some more. Bid on several pieces of BN rolling stock on eBay. Watched my train go around and around in circles some more. Searched the net for layout ideas and thought about just getting an Atlas track pack to work a layout around. Watched my train go around and around in circles some more. Posted on the Gauge some more. Checked my eBay bids. Watched my train go around and..... well you get the idea.

In between all that, I managed to work Saturday morning, go grocery shopping Saturday afternoon, take my wife to her job this morning, feed and dress the child and mow the lawn this afternoon. Now I'm getting ready to go throw supper on the grill.

I'm so domesticated sometimes.

Well, in order to prevent my train meeting the ground at a high rate of speed, My dad and I have made special plexiglass sides to line the most prone spots of derailment (the plexiglass is very hard to cut!). After filing and sanding, we tried to drill a hole in a scrap cracked peice ( the guards will be screwed on for stability and removability). We found that a normal drill just plain screws up the hole, but that a smaller wood boring drill head made a clean hole. We plan on picking up a 1/2 inch boring tip this week because my dad has some more "honey-do's" (like picking up Penn Station for dinner) as they're called on the Gauge.

Things to do for layout: 1.make guards (stats-in progress) and 2. Make engine shed (stats- looking for a good afordable one still)

I wish I could say that I spent it working on my scratchbuilt challenge project, but with all the activity here related to the recent changes, I've spent a good deal of time right here.

Oh, I did buy some material for the project, but not enough. Geeze, why couldn't I figure that out before I left the store?ops: ops:

I dusted off my work bench and finished up a couple of rolling stock kits that had been put on the back burner. Need the space to get to work on the structure challenge...(Looks like Don is in the same boat...). Operated the trains & thought about changes to the yard at Portales which I need to do before proceeding with scenery on that part of the layout...
Right now I'm getting in a go-to-work-tomorrow frame of mind...

I turned 2450 pounds of tumbled stone into several planting beds in the lawn. But I kept the tiny pieces for the layout!

Is this Peco flextrack and turnouts ?

I first went to the CNR track down the road to mesure the distance from the end of the tie to the bevel on the ballast.
I was lucky because at the same time I took my 1st railfanning picture here in Canada.
Then back home I trimmed some N scale roadbed so it matches the prototype I measured a few hours before ( The out of the box N scale cork roadbed is too wide ).

Then I worked on the DPM "Roadkill Cafe" while watching the L&N MP-15DC I purchased last wednsday.
Then I had a beer.

I forgot to mention that saturday I did some rail painting ( rail brown ) plus I did some trial for painting a rusted spur rails using Roof brown and rust.

I hope the gallery will be back soon so I can post bigger pictures, but I understand Peter is not The Gauge slave and needs to get some family life.

Spent Sunday at Old Sacramento CA, took a ride on their steam train, it was just a short one but fun. Had lunch at a nice cafe by the Sacramento River. Went to Roseville to the UP yard and watched them make some trains. Nice day for both activites.:smile:

Interesting Weekend

This weekend I spent the day Saturday at the drag races with my son. He drives a Jr Drugstore. Figuring on working on the layout on Sunday till my son decides he would like to go to the road race track at Summit Point. My only real modeling was I added a siding to my layout and added the roof to my contest model for the kit build challenge.

For me this weekend consisted of outdoor activities as it was a nice 20*C weekend. Sun and warm = Yard work. I did get some pics taken of the current mess, I mean layout, as it sits right now. I will try and get them posted up tonight. I did play my first game of lacrosse in 10 years and found out that i was severely out of shape but it was fun.

I didn't manage to get anything railroady done; it was mostly music. Friday I went to see my sister in A Funny Thing happened on the way to the Forum. She had a nice funny part -- only one song -- but wasn't complaining about the number of lines she had to memorize. (Plug: Whitby Courthouse Theatre, another 2 weekends.)
Saturday my wife went to a Horticultural Society district meeting and I was left, alone, bereft, without a car.
Sunday we went to the Brampton opera and saw a most powerful performance of Bluebeard's Castle. The soprano was a local girl, and she sounded as if she could give a lot of the big names a run for their money. Followed with I Pagliacci. First time I've seen either of them.

Got back from 3 weeks in Dallas/Fort Worth area (I live in Michigan). Spent a lot of time down there visiting train stores, spending money, etc. Ordered a Consolidation DCC steam loco that should be here in a couple of weeks. I am having the store convert it to DCC so I can spend my time getting my layout finalized. I have re-done it about 30 times, and spent part of the weekend changing it again. I think I finally have it finalized (as I said 30 times before), so after I take some pictures so I will remember how to set it up again, the layout base can be moved from my woodshop to it's final location. Then, the final track laying can take place. This winter project is going to take two or three winters to finish (if a layout ever is really finished).

tinkering, tinkering, frustration, tinkering, and successfully resisted the urge to throw a beutiful USRA 2-6-6-2 in any direction available because it just wouldn't run.

Today, more tinkering, and I FINALLY got the big girl to run. Now she's smooth as silk, and complements my light mountain nicely running about the double looped mainline tracks.

After that, I had some fun with switching problems, as I moved the 2-6-6-2's flatcar train to the inner loop with the mountain, then into the yards, around the ballon loop, and the ever fun challenge of putting it back out to the outer main loop while moving in the opposite direction to the box-freight the mountain engine was pulling!

Later this week, I'll be doing more tinkering, as one of my switches (buried under a mountain!) is giving me some de-railing problems.

Nothing much.
Proof-of-Concept mod of an Atlas LMT 9000 truck. Had this been a serious model, all fiber strands, Led surfaces, wires, insulation, leads, and the resistor would have been painted black to hide them and prevent light leaks such as you see in the last pic.

My next try will be an attempt to include a 'light board' instead of fiber optic strands. This would allow placement of the LED in the hood area, and the resistor somewhere between the frame rails, or in the cab. Don't plan on seeing it soon though. It's in a long line of projects.
