What I have found you can do with Bachmann Amfleet or most of the non-Spectrum Bachman things is don't buy them, and if you have them use them for decorations as they never seem to run worth a damn.

Well, Art, unless you are going to start production on Amfleet or Horizion cars in N scale, I guess I'm just up a creek then. I sure wish those damned manufacturers would stop trying to make N scale into a collector's market and actually do it right. We've had to wait eight years for Amtrak P42's, and you can bet they'll all be reserved before they're even made. They're passing up so many sales it's rediculous!

I have quite a fleet of the Bachmann Amfleet, and they just will not go through a turn without derailing. Not all of them at once, but one here and one there. It drives me crazy. I have gotten the wheel in guage, gotten the weight correct, and that didn't help. I then replaced the wheels, and then the trucks... and then I said... Forget it, and now they are in a yard that makes my passenger area look cool, but doesn't get the passengers to their destinations.

I currently have four Bachmann Amfleet coaches that I'm trying to get into running condition. Since there are no other passenger car options out there (Hint, hint Atlas and Kato...), not running them isn't an option. What can I do to make them run and look better? I've already disassembled them and removed the toy-like lighting system. I have plans of blanking out the center windows of one and making it into a food-service car. Any thoughts on improving their performance and appearance? Any help would be much appreciated!

due to the fact that there are not many manufactures making passenger, even at a decent price, I do not have any cars, those L.L. E- units that I have just wander around by themselves. N-scale could use a really good passenger range of cars. maybe some of us should start making them!!. I remember of a modelrailroader from the sixties that had a whole streamline set, including the loco, that was made from a wood plug and with layers of tissue paper and glue. then sanded and painted. does anyone out there know how to use resin?

Kato says that they will be coming out with some Amtrac stuff this year. Me, I'm going to wait. We have purchased at least 6 Bachmann PCC trolleys and the life expectency is approximately 20-30 hours, the shortest being 5 hours. They will have to go some to convince me every to try any of the junk they produce. It looks silly to have a DuWag tram running in an american city when we want PCC's, but having something that works is better than having a VERY static display of junk.

Resin is pretty easy to use, but I'm still on a bit of a learning curve myself about some of the finer details. So far I've learned that if you cast a good mold, in the right type of latex mold material, it's pretty easy. However, I've also expirimented with some other plastic resin, and temporary mold material with less spectacular results. The impression I get is that it was pressing against the mold too hard, and the mold was soft enough to deform and loose the detail.
I could devise a mold for just about anything I'd care to make, if I could make the master for a mold.
my Amfleet coaches are very reliable (other than they dont roll well

One thing you can do is remove the wheel sets and lightly ream out the holes that they go through.One other thing is remove the lighting and the axle wipers or at least reshape them so that they just barely brush againest the axles.
They still won't roll all that freely but they will roll better.
If your not all that fussy about prototype fidelity you could swap out the trucks for MTL passenger trucks,they are a different style but they do roll nicely.

I can't speak to the N scale versions but I do know that we had problems with our HO scale Bachmann Empire Builder cars on the club layout. Too light and poor coupling were the main troubles with them. We solved the coupler problem by replacing the originals with a special Kadee for the Talgo trucks. Additional weight added does wonders. Curve radius could also be a factor on a smaller home layout. With detailing, the sky's the limit.
