If you are like me and really enjoy model building, you may want to consider trying a wooden craftsman style kit. You can build a museum quality model using these kits. They are also an excellent primer for scratch building, as you are cutting most parts to size according to blueprints that come with the model. Of these craftsman kits, Campbell Scale Models produces some of the nicest at a reasonable price.

The kits come with very good quality wood and other parts. Windows and small doors are plastic. Kits come either with Campbell’s rolled paper shingles, corrugated roofing or tissue that is used to simulate rolled roofing and tar paper.

The first thing you will want to do is read the instructions through before you start building. Even though Campbell has very good instructions it is still easy to make a mistake. Once you have done this you are ready to start by painting or staining all the wood.

The wood comes in bags labeled A,B,C,D ect. Keep the wood separate so it doesn’t get mixed up. I put it in separate zip lock bags with the proper label inside.

You are now ready to start assembly. Any good wood glue will work. I stay away from CA so that I have time to position parts. If you use a yellow carpenters glue it will be dry enough to handle in about 10 min. Most building is done as assemblies and diagrams are pretty easy to follow although some can be confusing. Just take your time, dry fit parts before gluing and make sure you understand the instructions before cutting. If you make a mistake you will be running to the hobby store for more wood. You get just enough for the kit with very little left over.

These kits are in a style that works in most eras from steam right through to modern diesel. The detail is very good and construction ranges from simple to quite complex depending on which kit you choose. Most sheet stock is die cut to make things a little easier. Everything else you will cut yourself so a good razor saw and miter box is a must.

If you want a structure you can be really proud of you can’t beat one of the Campbell craftsman kits.
